  • China is a strategic decision not a market of
    last resort
  • The strategic decision is yes, no or wait
  • When developing a China plan, start with your
    exit strategy
  • You maybe the best partner for them, but are
they the best partner for you?
  • Luck is an important element in your China
    strategy
  • Note NZTE is not advocating that everyone
    should be in China

China StrategiesWhat to consider if the answer
is Yes
  • You have to kiss a lot of frogs
  • Where there is employment, there is stability,
where there is stability, the status quo
    remains
  • China doesnt import widgets - they make
    export them
  • China has a population of 1.3 billion (not
    market)
  • A bad deal in China is worse than no deal at
    all
  • Never believe it until it has been officially
    denied - contradictions abound

20
China StrategiesWhat to consider if the answer
is Yes
  • If it looks too good to be true, it probably is

    strategy and customs
  • Independent verification check and question

  • If you wouldnt do it in Australia, dont do it
    in China.

    game
  • 6 Ps of Preparation (proper preparation
    prevents ps poor performance)

21
China StrategiesWhat to consider if the answer
is Yes
  • When the contract is signed, negotiations begin
    in earnest
  • Cannot underestimate the value of government to
    government relations
  • China is Rule by Law, not Rule of Law
  • A conflict of interest is a competitive
    advantage
  • Cannot manage at arms length will need to get
    your hands dirty
