General Information

• Located in southwestern Asia
• Baghdad is the capital and largest city
• Iraq means the land along the banks of rivers
• The country is comparable in size to California
• Mostly a desert climate

Culture

• Mainly consists of 5 different cultures
• Kurdish
• Sunni Islamic Arabs
• Shia Islamic Arabs
• Assyrians
• Marsh Arabs

Insufficient Education

• 818,000 children cannot go to school
• For some, schools are not available because they
  need to be repaired and rebuilt
• Kidnaps and attacks occur in schools and as a
  result, frightened parents remove their children
  out of fear
• Others do not attend school because they need to
  work and earn money for their family

The War

• The U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003 with hopes of
  removing Saddam Hussein from power and
  implicating a system of democracy in the middle
  east
• A new constitution was passed on October 25, 2005
• Over 140,000 U.S. and allied troops remain

The Capture of Saddam

• On December 13, 2003, Saddam Hussein was found by
  U.S. military forces and captured

Never-ending Violence

• Car bombs and suicide attacks cause death and
  devastation everyday

Rebuilding

• The U.S. has given over 45 billion to aid in the
  reconstruction of Iraq, however some has been
  lost to corruption among Iraqi government
  officials
• So far the progress is very limited
