Title: EOT Issue Forum

1
EOT Issue Forum
  • Report on Discussions

2
  • In what ways can the NEES CI, including
    (multi-site) experiments, high-fidelity data,
visualization, etc. be more effectively utilized
    for education, outreach, and/or training
activities? How can the tools and outcomes
facilitate other opportunities for EOT projects?
What partnerships need to be established to
    accomplish these goals?

3
? USING NEW TOOLS
  • Essentials collaborative (no re-inventing),
engaging, CI tools, educational modules tied to
    national teaching standards/curriculum (_at_K-12),
faculty development (_at_ univ and K-12)
  • Two main ideas to initiate these activities
  • Collaborative (live/virtual) equipment
    site/experiment tours
  • Collection integration of existing activities
(CCLI?) at undergrad and/or high school levels
  • How do equipment sites, etc find the right
    contacts to invite/arrange demos?
  • Student organizations (SWE, NSBE), activities in
    other departments, orientation events, engineers
    week, etc

4
? USING NEW TOOLS
  • Dissemination NEES website redesign, repository
for best activities for adoption by broader
    community, also NSDL is important

5
  • 2. Should a NEES Student Association be formed?
What type of model would this organization
follow, and what are the roles and
responsibilities of the members? of a possible
leadership council? What would be the benefits to
the students and to the NEES community? What
expenses would occur and how could these be
    funded?

6
? STUDENT ASSOCIATION
  • At this time not a lot of support for this idea.
  • Benefits to students leadership skills
  • Motivation ??
  • Could participate in outreach activities and
    design competition
  • How fund?
  • Maybe better to work with existing organizations,
    EERI chapters, etc

7
  • 3. How will the NEES EOT community effectively
support researchers in the development and
offering of short courses and seminars designed
to bring the latest research outcomes to
practicing engineers? How can NEESinc assist with
coordination? How does the community avoid
duplication of efforts by different NEESR teams?
  • How can NEESinc support?
  • How to engage practitioners?
  • Where announce?

8
? PRACTITIONER OUTREACH
  • Work with other groups to disseminate and
    increase awarenessASCE, EERI, etc.
  • Short courses
  • how to avoid duplication
  • accreditation/CEUs
  • How can NEESinc staff help?
  • posting on website
  • coordination of multiple offerings in several
    places
  • organization and consistency in materials

9
  • 4. What should be NEES lasting EOT legacy? What
programs/activities would need to be successfully
undertaken in order to establish these legacy
    goals?
  • Post year 10
  • What is success?
  • Do we need a Vision/Mission statement?
  • Measureable outcomes?
  • Website NSDL interactions?

10
? LEGACY
  • Suite of Outcomes
  • proven exercises evaluation
  • research in learning and teaching distributed
    framework
  • based on real-world data and CI tools
  • broadening participation
  • impact on future engineering workforce
  • Full concept will need time to verbalize,
    educational collaboratory
  • Developing a EOT Forum to maintain communication
among EOT personnel at sitesmonthly conference
    calls
