5Visit the School
- If the school has an Ask questions---now is
- the time
- Explore the campus, talk to students and
- staff, poke around
- Ask about clubs, greek life, financial aid
- opportunities, working with professors
- and/or anything else that you need to know
6Be Aware of Admissions Requirements
? First and foremost--every school is
different ? Know the admissions criteria and
requirements for your intended
major ? Know the difference between rolling
admissions and selective admissions
7Important Deadlines
? Admissions ? Financial Aid ? Residence
Life ? Registration ? Fees--tuition, housing,
etc.
8Things to Think About Once You are at the Four
Year School
9Roommates
? Respect each others differences ? Try and
set general ground rules from the start -
i.e. Overnight visitors, noise,
etc. ? Upperclassmen as roommates are often
more serious and can provide many helpful
hints especially if they have been at the
school for awhile
10New Relationships
?You will develop life long friendships from
this experience ?Develop study groups ?Get
involved in the social life on campus--clubs,
organizations, Greek life, intramurals
11 Managing a Budget
? Avoid temptation to apply for easy to obtain
credit cards ?Consult parents or significant
other before making decisions on these
cards ? Know the limits, interest rates, late
fees and penalties ? Know how long it
will take to pay off card if only making
minimum payments each month

Determine early on how much you typically are
spending in a week, how much you can afford to
spend and THEN plan your budget. This sounds
simple but it isnt!
13Internships
? Provides a very valuable experience ? Helps
you solidify career choice ? Looks very good on
your resume gives you real-world
experience ? Most are unpaid ? Will help separate
you from other candidates applying to graduate
school
14Academic Planning
? Understand your curriculum/degree
plan ? Some courses may only be offered in
certain semesters--get them when you
can ? Consult with your advisor early and on a
regular basis. This person will keep you on
track to graduation.
15Be Aware of Graduation Requirements
This is even more important if you are choosing
either a minor or a second/double major. Be
sure and work with your faculty advisor.
16Available Resources
Make use of all available resources on campus.
These can enhance your chances of landing a job
or entering graduate or professional
schools. Look for ? Internships ? Research
opportunities with professors in your
department/major ? Career planning and placement
office. Visit early and often. They can
assist with job placement, resumes, etc.
17Final Thoughts
You are about to experience something that can
and will change your life. Take the time to make
the most out of it. Ask questions and make sure
you understand the answers. Meet new people and
learn from them. But most of all, remember
that you are taking a step towards your
