- Secondary I-BEST program for English Language
Learners - Personalized support through Navigation 101
- Expanded training in high-demand fields through
grants to high schools - Math and science enhancements for middle schools
- Partnership among CTE, Advanced Placement and
Secondary Education
9Skills Centers
- Regional high schools that provide extended,
industry-defined technical education - Students can earn up to 4 high school
credits/year in programs that include hands-on
training - Students typically attend the skills center for
half day, regular high school for half day - Washington State has 10 skills centers, helping
to start 4 more - Approximately 7,000 students in 85 districts
attend skills centers
10Secondary I-BEST
- Integrates with core academics with technical
skill training for our English Language Learners - Creates seamless transition from high school to
community and technical college programs - Aims to help students who are struggling with
English earn a high school diploma and prepare
for postsecondary - Program is currently piloted through skills
centers - Five skills centers funded for 2008-09
11Science, Technology, Engineering Math
- STEM is science, technology, engineering and math
instruction - Includes classes and career exploration in
BioTechnology, Agriculture Technology,
Nanotechnology, several areas of Engineering, and
other technologies - STEM helps students in grades 7-12 engage in
high-demand high-wage careers - State funding has provided support to develop
courses and train teachers

- CTE is partnering with AP to increase student
success after high school - 250 teachers have been trained to add AP outcomes
to CTE classes - CTE/AP pairings include
- CTE Computer programming ? AP Computer Science
- CTE Commercial Art ? AP Studio Art Drawing 2D/3D
- CTE Natural Resources ? AP Environmental Science
- CTE Family Systems ? AP Psychology
- CTE Economics ? AP Macroeconomics

- In 2006-07, 19,436 high school students earned
over 121,030 community and technical college
credits - In 2007-08, 24,326 students earned over 148,160
credits - Students average 6 college credits
- Families save over 6 million in college tuition
each year - Tech Prep includes apprenticeship options
- Program is growing quickly, with more course
options for students

- Pre-apprenticeships for high school students
- Pair classroom work with on-the-job training
- Prepare students for post-graduation
apprenticeships - Apprenticeships available in

- Culinary arts
- 14,500 people enrolled in apprenticeships in 2007
up from 8,500 in 2005
15College and Career Readiness
- Completing a CTE program is associated with
higher levels of employment, wages, hours and
earnings - CTE concentrators are equally likely to enroll in
either community and technical college or
four-year college as non-concentrators

- Navigation 101 helps students explore their
interests and learn how to prepare - CTE is a best fit within Navigation 101
advisory lessons - Navigation curriculum is being upgraded to
strengthen integration with CTE - Offer CTE alignment within ASCA standard areas
- Fully integrate HS Beyond Plan with CTE Program
of Study so students need only one plan - Add more information on secondary and
postsecondary CTE options - Expand information on career clusters
- Coordinate with skills centers

components of all CTE courses. Career and
Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) often
provide curricula and experiences, but leadership
skills should be included for every student in
every lesson, every day
24High School Beyond Plan
- Navigation 101 students complete HS Beyond
worksheets each year to track their progress and
their plans - By senior year, these plans are robust, and
incorporate high school courses, a financial
plan, postsecondary plans, and career goals - The Navigation 101 High School Beyond Plan is
fully compliant with the CTE Program of Study
requirement CTE students in a Navigation 101
school can simply complete the HS Beyond Plan
25Culminating Project
- Navigation 101 students use their HS Beyond
Plans and the information in their portfolios as
the basis for robust plans for their lives - For their Culminating Projects, students reflect
on their plans and share them with their
advisors, families, and a team of community
members - CTE students also develop clear and careful plans
for life after high school a natural fit with
the Culminating Project

- Navigation 101 Lesson plans are being enhanced to
include information on key CTE initiatives - Why? Knowledge is power
- Updates will offer additional resources for
advisors and students and supplement the
opportunities already available through
Navigation 101

- Navigation 101 lesson plans are being upgraded to
refer to Career Clusters, the designation used in
CTE - Career Cluster information helps students explore
their options and learn how to connect their
interests to potential careers - Students and advisors are offered links to more
detailed career exploration tools

- As part of CTEs growth, Navigation 101 lesson
plans are being upgraded to integrate more fully
with CTE - This upgrade will help Navigation 101 serve ALL
