  • Expanded training in high-demand fields through
    grants to high schools

  • Partnership among CTE, Advanced Placement and
    Secondary Education

9
Skills Centers
  • Regional high schools that provide extended,
    industry-defined technical education
  • Students can earn up to 4 high school
credits/year in programs that include hands-on
    training
  • Students typically attend the skills center for
half day, regular high school for half day
  • Washington State has 10 skills centers, helping
    to start 4 more
  • Approximately 7,000 students in 85 districts
    attend skills centers

10
Secondary I-BEST
  • Integrates with core academics with technical
skill training for our English Language Learners
  • Creates seamless transition from high school to
    community and technical college programs
  • Aims to help students who are struggling with
English earn a high school diploma and prepare
    for postsecondary
  • Program is currently piloted through skills
    centers
  • Five skills centers funded for 2008-09

11
Science, Technology, Engineering Math
  • STEM is science, technology, engineering and math
    instruction
  • Includes classes and career exploration in
    BioTechnology, Agriculture Technology,
Nanotechnology, several areas of Engineering, and
    other technologies

    high-demand high-wage careers
  • State funding has provided support to develop
    courses and train teachers

12

  • 14,500 people enrolled in apprenticeships in 2007
    up from 8,500 in 2005

15
College and Career Readiness
  • Completing a CTE program is associated with
higher levels of employment, wages, hours and
    earnings
  • CTE concentrators are equally likely to enroll in
either community and technical college or
    four-year college as non-concentrators

16
Navigation 101 CTE
  • Navigation 101 helps students explore their
interests and learn how to prepare
  • CTE is a best fit within Navigation 101
    advisory lessons
  • Navigation curriculum is being upgraded to
    strengthen integration with CTE
  • Offer CTE alignment within ASCA standard areas
  • Fully integrate HS Beyond Plan with CTE Program
of Study so students need only one plan
  • Add more information on secondary and
    postsecondary CTE options
  • Expand information on career clusters
  • Coordinate with skills centers

17

components of all CTE courses. Career and
    Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) often
provide curricula and experiences, but leadership
skills should be included for every student in
    every lesson, every day

24
High School Beyond Plan
  • Navigation 101 students complete HS Beyond
worksheets each year to track their progress and
    their plans
  • By senior year, these plans are robust, and
incorporate high school courses, a financial
plan, postsecondary plans, and career goals
  • The Navigation 101 High School Beyond Plan is
fully compliant with the CTE Program of Study
requirement CTE students in a Navigation 101
school can simply complete the HS Beyond Plan

25
Culminating Project
  • Navigation 101 students use their HS Beyond
Plans and the information in their portfolios as
the basis for robust plans for their lives
  • For their Culminating Projects, students reflect
on their plans and share them with their
advisors, families, and a team of community
    members
  • CTE students also develop clear and careful plans
for life after high school a natural fit with
    the Culminating Project
