Our Goal

• Work in collaboration with State Waste
  Management Centre
• To study the ways people dispose solid waste in
  the community and
• To form strategies for managing waste effectively
  for the community area

1. Location

• We chose Shivaji Nagar Community Area for our
  study
• We planned for site visits and survey to study
  the community area

2. Site Visit

• We went for a site visit and to Shivaji Nagar on
• Date16th February, 2006
• Time9 am - 10 am
• Day Thursday

We recorded our observations on the basis of

• The kind of solid waste generated in the area
• Number and location of waste bins in the area
• Use of different bins for bio-degradable and non
  bio-degradable waste
• Availability and provision of trucks / dumpers

We observed

• 50 of the solid waste consists of Organic waste
  i.e leaves, kitchen residue, paper, wood, etc.

Other Observations

• 10 waste bins placed centrally
• No separate bins for bio-degradable and non
  bio-degradable waste
• Truck comes to collect garbage everyday at 10 am

• Do you know what a compost pit is?
• Do you have a compost pit in the area?

• 80 residents dispose solid waste like kitchen
  residue, paper, glass, wood, etc. in a common
  bin.

4.Summary of Findings

• 80 residents dispose solid waste like kitchen
  residue, paper, glass, wood, etc. in a common
  bin.
• 95 residents do not separate bio-degradable and
  non bio degradable waste.
• 70 residents dont know what is compost pit!!
• Shivaji Nagar doesnt have composed pit though
  50 of its solid waste comprises of bio
  degradable waste!!

5. Our Action

• Share our findings with the municipal officers of
  Shivaji Nagar.
• Discuss our strategy to dispose solid waste
  effectively in Shivaji Nagar
• Conduct an awareness rally in the school
  neighbourhood
• Build a compost pit in City Park
