Compostable food waste

• Group has looked at a number of schemes and
  methods of collection
• Each authority has a slightly different
  configuration
• Need in-vessel composting facility nearby
• Need to ensure the process from customer to
  collection is well handled

Including food waste in West Devons collections?

• Lobby DCC to provide infrastructure to enable us
  to deal with food waste
• Include costings for this service in future waste
  contract
• Assess Focsas capacity for additional material
  on the new dry recycling vehicles

Lessons learned

• Ensure that sufficient funds are allocated to
  public information, education, promotion and call
  handling
• Assess how much time and resource you will need
  for the above and double it!!!
• Phase implementations of new schemes
• Plan a timetable and do not deviate.
• Get the customer, local press etc on side from
  the start and keep everyone informed
