Education Committee Overview
  • The mission of the NYSGISA Education committee is
    to promote and provide opportunities that foster
    and otherwise accelerate the understanding and
    use of geospatial information technologies (GIT).
  • The goal of the committee in 2007-8 is create an
    organizational capacity within NYSGISA that can
    introduce emerging geospatial information
    technologies and current best practices in
    various academic, research and application
    domains.

  • The objectives of the committee in 2007-8 are
  • 1.) Establish a temporary task force to define
    and assess the potential for SUNY to become the
    geospatial education and training center of the
    nation, with the community colleges serving as
    the gateway to 4,5 and 6 year campuses.
  • Cause the initial meeting of this Task Force and
    generate a white paper detailing a strategic plan
    if such potential exists or summarizing the list
    of opportunities and obstacles that on balance
    have led to the conclusion that such potential
    does not exist.

  • 2.) Support the continuance of the Galileo Awards
    and assess the potential for additional
    collaborative activities with the NYSGIS Program,
    Education Work Group.
  • Report to the NYSGISA BOD such materials and
    information as is needed to define a course of
    action for the Board to consider, in view of such
    an assessment.

  • 3.) Define additional activities intended to
    cause an increase in understanding of geospatial
    information technology and their applications
  • and prepare an annual work program detailing
    specific activities and intended measurable
    outcomes resulting from such a work program.
  • Suggest those actions for BOD considerations that
    are required to insure the continual preparation
    and implementation of such an annual work
    program.

    extended to Friday May 30.
  • TwiST is sponsored by the Institute for the

    Mid-Hudson Service Learning Institute for
    Watershed and Environmental Studies, Cayuga
    Community College, SUNY College of Environmental
    Science and Forestry, and the New York State
    Education Department.
