3
Reduce the amount and
toxicity of trash you discard.
4
Reduce
  • Source reduction means consuming and throwing
    away less. It includes
  • Purchasing durable, long-lasting goods
  • Seeking products and packaging that are as free
    of toxics as possible
  • Redesigning products to use less raw material

5
Reuse containers and products,
repair what is broken, or
give it to someone who can repair it.
6
Reuse
  • Reusing items by
  • Repairing them
  • Donating them to charity and community groups
  • Selling them also reduces waste.

7
Recycle as much as possible,
which includes buying products
with recycled content.
8
Recycling
  • Turns materials that would otherwise become waste
    into valuable resources
  • Generates a host of environmental, financial, and
    social benefits
  • Diverted 82 million tons of material away from
    landfills in 2006

Buying Recycled Products
  • In order to make recycling economically feasible,
we must buy recycled products and packaging.
  • When we buy recycled products, we create an
economic incentive for recyclable materials to be
collected, manufactured, and marketed as new
    products.

11
Composting
  • Another form of recycling
  • Controlled biological decomposition of organic
    matter
  • Nature's way of recycling organic waste into new
    soil

13
Electronics
  • Threaten the environment because of the dangerous
    elements in them
  • Reuse and recycling prevents electronic items
    from reaching landfills.
  • As new products hit the market, relevant
information and resources are necessary to ensure
    old items are properly discarded.

14
Cell Phones
  • Shelf life is only about 18 months for the
    average consumer.
  • Coatings are often made of lead.
  • Batteries were originally composed of nickel and
    cadmium.
  • Cadmium is linked as a human carcinogen that
    causes lung and liver damage.

Computers
  • Many laptops have a small fluorescent lamp in the
    screen that contains mercury.
  • Mercury is also contained in computer circuit
    boards.
  • It doesnt take much lead or mercury to
contaminate an areas soil or water supply.
  • Keep this in mind when youre figuring out what
to do with those old electronic devices.

Automotive
  • To keep a vehicle running well, an owner should
change the vehicles motor oil and fluids
    regularly.
  • With regular maintenance comes a responsibility
to know how and where to properly recycle used
    motor oil and vehicle fluids.
  • Car emissions can be harmful to the environment
    and to us.

23
Air Pollution Prevention
  • Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA sets limits on
how much of a pollutant is allowed in the air
    anywhere in the United States.
  • Although national air quality has improved over
the last 20 years, many challenges remain in
protecting public health and the environment.

24
Climate Change
  • Climate change affects people, plants and
    animals.
  • Climate change is often associated with terms
like greenhouse gases, which are gases that trap
    heat in the atmosphere.
  • Examples include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous
    oxide and fluorinated gases.

25
Energy
  • We have an important role to play right now.
  • Energy conservation and efficiency go a long way
preserving our planets rich natural resources
    and promoting a healthy environment.
  • We can all reduce demand, cut energy costs, and
    protect our precious natural resources.

26
Water
  • The pollution of water has a serious impact on
    all living creatures.
  • It can negatively affect the use of water for
    drinking, household needs, recreation, fishing,
    transportation and commerce.
  • Can easily be contaminated
  • One gallon of motor oil can contaminate 1 million
    gallons of water.

27
My Project Change
28
What did I do to Go Green?
  • Started recycling at my house
  • Used no wrapping paper for Christmas- only
    colorful boxes and bags
  • Began turning every light and appliance off while
    not in use
  • Recycled paper for teachers and students at
    school
  • Made a New Years Resolution to keep doing these
things and more to help our environment

33
8 Ways for Students to Go Green
34
Recycle Your Old Papers
  • Over 50 percent of paper is currently recycled in
the United States, but you could easily burn
through hundreds of pages for each class in a
    given semester.
  • Also consider reusing some of this paper for
friends who will be taking these classes next
    semester.

35
Green Your Garbage
  • This can include old electronics, paint, cleaning
supplies or car care products, all of which are
dangerous to the environment if disposed of
    improperly.
  • Organizing your garage may seem like the last
thing you want to do during your weekend, but it
will pay dividends for your family (and the
    environment) in the long run.

36
Shop Online
  • Instead of jumping in the car and consuming
energy for your last-minute shopping, consult the
    Internet for your shopping needs.
  • Most of the stores you would visit will have Web
sites to buy products anyway, and you can often
find shipping specials during the holidays.
  • Just remember to recycle the packaging that your
    shipped gifts come with.

37
Calculate Your Carbon Footprint
  • Your carbon footprint will show you the impact
that your daily activities are having on the
    environment.
  • More importantly, it provides you an opportunity
to think about areas where you can reduce your
    carbon footprint.

38
Do Some Green Reading
  • There are countless books that cover
environmental issues, many of which will be
available at the school or public library.
  • The environment is expected to play a larger role
in the 2008 Presidential election, so students
should do their part to read up and learn the
background on these issues before campaigning
kicks into high gear in March 2008.

39
Check Out E-Textbooks Next Semester
  • An eco-friendly alternative is the e-textbook,
which takes hundreds of pages and puts them in an
electronic format to cut down on tree use.
  • You can find thousands of e-textbooks online,
while also reducing the cost you pay at the
    bookstore.
  • One good option for e-textbooks is CafeScribe.

40
Go Green in Bundles
  • Winter weather means increased energy use.
  • Wear heavy sweaters in the house so you dont
have to crank the heat or light a fire, and make
sure you wear a jacket so you dont have to run
    the car heater.
  • Keep some blankets around the house to keep you
warm when the temperatures really drop.

41
Create Green Year Resolutions
  • One great idea is to commit to recycling this
year, perhaps by aiding the recycling program at
    school.
  • The trick is to make sure that your resolutions
are reasonable enough that youll be able to keep
    them.
  • If you want to eat healthier in 2008, look for
organic foods and compost your food scraps.
