  • The librarys reference service consists of the
    reference desk, which is staffed during all hours
    the library is open, our reference book
    collection, our Dynix online catalog, and our
    public access workstations.
  • Librarians are pleased to assist patrons in
  • locating library materials
  • finding answers to factual questions
  • learning to use the online catalog and public
    access workstations
  • facilitating research needs

  • Online Catalog
  • Horizon is the library catalog. It provides,
    electronically, author, title, and subject access
    to all of the material owned by the VC/UHV
    library. There are 6 terminals on the 1st floor.
    All six 1st floor terminals have an associated
    printer.
  • Public Access Workstations
  • The first floor of the library contains 28
    computer stations for
  • accessing the Internet
  • searching library databases including indexes to
    journals, newspapers and magazines
  • using word processing and other applications

Lower Level
  • The librarys circulation department, located on
    the first floor, is responsible for
  • checking books in and out of the library
  • issuing library/college ID cards
  • overseeing the reserve collection
  • public access workstation printouts
  • pickup of interlibrary loan items
  • re-shelving books

Miscellaneous Services
Lower Level
  • Interlibrary loan A service (free to students,
    faculty and staff) by which we will locate and
    borrow material not owned by the library. Click
    here for additional information on Interlibrary
    loan.
  • Copiers The library has photocopiers on the 1st
    and 2nd floors that are coin operated (.10 per
    page)
  • Laser Printing Each of the public access
    workstations is connected to a laser printer
    located behind the circulation desk. Charges are
    .05 per page for students and .10 per page for
    non-students
  • Application Software The 27 public access
    stations are equipped with a variety of
    application programs for word processing,
    presentation, spreadsheet, graphics, and database
    needs.
  • Conference Rooms The library provides conference
    rooms on the 3rd floor that are suitable for
    group study. Rooms can be reserved at the
    reference desk.

Media Library
Lower Level
  • The Media Library contains multi-media audio
    visual materials and the equipment necessary for
    their use. All audio visual materials taken out
    of the library must be checked out in and
    returned to the Media Library. The Media Library
    is located in the University Center, the new UHV
    building on the east side of campus

Lower Level
  • The Serials department is where we keep journals,
    magazines, newspapers, and microforms.
  • Microform refers to two formats, microfiche and
    microfilm. Microform reader/printers in this
    department can provide paper printouts of
    information in this format.
  • Serials department materials do not circulate.

  • The 3rd floor contains most of the librarys book
    collection. All books use the Library of
    Congress system of classification in which
    letters of the alphabet followed by numbers
    represent a books subject.
  • Main--contains non-reference books on all
    subjects.
  • Juvenile--contains materials designed for use by
    Education students.
  • Local History--contains books on the history of
    Texas and the southwest.
  • Oversized--contains books (on many subjects) that
    do not fit on the regular shelving.

  • Library departments and facilities found on the
    lower level include the following.
  • Technical Services--Acquisitions, cataloging,
    systems.
  • Classroom--The L2 classroom is the site for many
    library skills classes such as Freshman
    Orientation.
  • Archives--The location for materials that are
    old, rare, in delicate condition, and/or of
    unique interest. Archives materials (sometimes
    known as Special Collections) may only be used in
    the Archives room. For additional information on

  • The librarys mission is to support the curricula
    of Victoria College and the University of Houston
    at Victoria. Most materials are selected for
    their research and academic value.
  • Library materials are in three basic formats
  • Print--books, periodicals, government documents
  • Multi-media--primarily audio-visual materials
  • Electronic--computerized databases
