Diversity is everywhere
  • You probably see the eight areas of diversity
    everyday.
  • In groups look at sheets of paper
  • Where do you see or experience these areas
    everyday?
  • Can you see these areas at work? Where?

9
Intercultural awareness
  • As teachers, we all know the four skills
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Writing
  • What is the fifth skill?

10
Intercultural Awareness
  • Our role as teachers are
  • Teaching language to children and teenagers plays
a part in developing their minds, thoughts and
    social practices
  • Language teachers need to provide learners with
social tools in order to support a global
language community in its cultural diversity

11
The advantages are
  • Helps increase the learners awareness of the
    world around them
  • Helps us be aware of how our cultures are seen
    from the outside
  • Understand and see the target culture from its
own view and not one that is commonly shown
  • Helps to interact better with the world by being
more aware of the diversity of cultures.

12
The advantages
  • Interesting and engaging lessons where the
learners and the teacher can make meaningful
comparisons between their own culture and the
    target culture.
  • This means that
  • A non native teacher of English has the advantage
    of comparing cultures

13
Is this the UK?
14
Is this your Brazil?
