ILCTA Controls Status

Getting Updates
  • Most of these slides stolen from CD ILC-Forum
talk last week all were invited.
  • Please review monthly status reports. For the
most part, we are writing them for you. They are
    available in DocDB
  • http//docdb.fnal.gov/ILC-public/DocDB/DocumentDat
    abase
  • Please read these and help us prioritize.
Personnel effort is so small, that every request
you make, slows down progress somewhere else.
  • Second monitor for coupler

SCRF Focus
  • Infrastructure support
  • Core controls system(s) support, development, and
    configuration management including code packaging
    and distribution
  • Controls systems include EPICS, DOOCS and
diagnostic systems such as LabView and MatLab
  • Develop cavity data management system
  • not the group of people that you interface with
  • Additional component support including system
    management, electronic logbook, cavity data
    management system
  • Test area specific
  • NML specific development
  • Develop timing and clock system that are required
    for first beam operation
  • Develop interfaces for new components for
    instrumentation and control
  • Develop controls interface for ATCA BPMs
  • Develop/configure NML application software
  • HTS/VTS ongoing support updating processes, and
user interfaces as more experience with the
    cavities is gleaned.

4
Labor Resources Needed
  • Labor - 12 FTE annually
  • Infrastructure support
  • NML specific support
  • HTS/VTS support
  • Cavity Data Management Development (1 year only)
  • Details later
  • CD Ron, Luciano, Margaret, New Hire, Bakul, Rob
    Kutschke, Connie/Troy
  • AD Mike Kucera (SCRF Controls Deputy Head),
Sharon Lackey (Head while Margaret gone), Dennis
Nicklaus, Jerry Firebaugh, Jimmy You, Michele
    McCusker-Whiting
  • PPD Geoff Savage, Vladimir Sirotenko
  • UofI contract Micheal Davidsaver
  • Does not include support for Tim
  • 3.0 -gt 3.5 FTEs effort reported this quarter.
  • 4 ! 12

5
Annual Labor Details
  • About 8.5 possible FTEs identified spread over 25
people in 4 divisions (bulk in AD and CD)
  • Connie/Troy starting sys admin support
  • Two new people in AD/Controls starting. Large
    learning curve
  • In processing of hiring new full time person.
Interviewing is taking away peoples time.
  • In process of establishing collaboration with
    UofI. Student arriving midMay

NML Specific Software Development 3 FTE
NML Specific Hardware Engineering 2 FTE
New instrumentation interfaces 0.5 FTE, increases over time
Network Switch installation 0.2 FTE
Data Management Development 2.5 FTE, decreases over time
ILCTA infrastructure 3.5 FTE
HTF Support 0.5 FTE
VTS Support 0.25 FTE

Global Infrastructure
  • Establishing EPICS installation layout
  • Epics has its own build system that is different
    than the FNAL/CD standard way.
  • Primarily paths are hardcoded, not determined via
environment variables. This has a large
implication on build and distribution strategies.
  • Have a proposal almost done for managing built
software. Need to work on how to manage
    area-specific configuration information.
  • Naming convention for EPICS variables
  • Proposal in AD Doc database
  • http//beamdocs.fnal.gov/AD-public/DocDB/ShowDocum
    ent
  • Consistent for HINS and ILC
  • Make data transition between DOOCS and EPICS
    easier
  • Front end supprt
  • Including dumping of SPARC boards
  • System Management
  • Connie/Troy helping here
  • Custom kernels, many behind AD firewall, in
    remote locations, etc.
  • CRL installed and in use

7
VTS
  • Not much to say
  • Controls system in LabView. Provided by JLab as
    part of MOU.
  • Needs to interface to CRL and cavity data
    management system.

HTF/CC2
  • Primarily EPICS, but LLRF in DOOCS
  • Todo list
  • Establish standard EPICS (and friends)
installation so we can support it.
  • LLRF Controller is SPARC board. Its old and
problematic. Working on replacing it with an X86
    running Linux.
  • Hit by roadblocks, eg Matlab version increase
    with know prior knowledge.
  • Still includes ACNET for RF interface
  • New interlock crates with additional digitizers
    will fix this
  • Want to Alarm/Archive in EPICS
  • Get Doocs2Epics interface running.
  • Upgrade DOOCS Driver with new server (firmware
    has changed)
  • Automation, Automation, Automation
  • Dennis Nicklaus away at LHC for summer May -gt
    September.
  • Documentation

10
A0
  • Prototype of many pieces of equipment moving to
    NML
  • Photoinjector
  • OTR devices
  • BPMs
  • Strictly DOOCS
  • Various operational support issues
  • Servers didnt start after March shutdown. Lot of
confusion due to second ip address assigned to
    spitefire06.

NML Controls Work
  • Weekly status meetings
  • Monthly report (all of ILC controls activity)
  • Requirements document started
  • Lack of progress on timing is turning out to be a
    big deal
  • MS Project Plan started
  • Control room outfitting in progress, equipment
    being ordered
  • Cosylab Epics embedded IOC ordered and being
    tested.
  • Cryo components being brought online
  • Would like website to help document
  • Lower priority than other ILCTA areas
    (HTF/VTS/A0)
  • gt suffers in schedule delay because personnel
    often the same.
  • Instrumentation effort has discovered that Ron
(and Luciano) are great at integration.
