Title: CHEMISTRY 101 GENERAL INFORMATION

1
CHEMISTRY 101GENERAL INFORMATION
  • A. Lecture-Discussions
  • The lectures and discussions provide an
opportunity for you to tie together the various
aspects of the course. As you complete your
assignments, it is a good idea to mark down
concepts and ideas that you don't understand and
write down questions that you can bring up in
class or during office hours. Attendance is
extremely important. You are expected to attend
class every day it is scheduled. You may lose
points on certain assignments if you do not
    attend class.

2
  • B. Problem Sets
  • These will not be collected because they are
best used as diagnostic aids for you to find out
what you do know and what you don't. Experience
has shown that if you complete them regularly you
will perform well on and exams.
  • C. Quizzes
  • The quizzes are a chance for you to show how
well you are doing. You will be able to see how
well you can perform in a testing situation away
from your notes and CD-ROM. A quiz and a key as
well as a practice quiz and a key will be
provided to you on the CD-ROM package. These
quizzes are designed to be self-tests to help you
prepare for the graded exams. Quiz grades will
not be counted on your overall grade! A Quiz
    Log is provided.

3
  • D. Labs
  • You will be required to complete laboratory
    exercises.
  • E. Exams
  • Exams this semester will be worth 50 of the
course grade. They will be given in the classroom
during class time. Questions will be based on
    lectures, problem sets, CD-ROM interactive
material, practice quizzes and quizzes. Bring a
calculator and pencil to all exams unless you are
told otherwise. A Student Tracking Conference
    section is provided.
  • F. Final Exam
  • The Final Exam will be comprehensive! It will
cover everything we do during the semester. The
Final Exam counts 20 of the course grade and
CANNOT be dropped. You must take the Final Exam
in order to complete the course and receive
    credit.

4
  • G. Grade Dropping
  • One exam may be dropped on a CASE BY CASE basis.
This policy is not designed to raise anyone's
overall average exam score! It is designed for
    people who encounter unavoidable circumstances
sometime during the semester (funeral, wedding,
accident, car trouble, domestic problem or any
other type of unavoidable emergency). You will
not BE ALLOWED TO MAKE-UP AN EXAM so please do
not come to us and ask if you can make-up an
exam. That will immediately tell us you did not
read this explicit detailed explanation. The
policy is not designed for anyone who "just
doesn't feel like they are ready to take an
exam." Interactive Video Labs and CD-ROM
assignments may also be dropped on a CASE BY CASE
basis. In order to drop an assignment, the
student, professor and chair must sign a grade
drop document which verifies the nature of the
situation. Drop grades do not count for or
    against you.
