1
Announcements
  • Mini-Homework 12 due Friday
  • Turn this one in to your AI
  • Quiz 4 Wednesday
  • Roman Numerals and Figured Bass Symbols Spell
    and ID

2
Non-Chord Tones
  • Two Primary Types
  • Passing Tone (PT)
  • Used to fill space between chord members, usually
space of a third or fourth
  • Neighbor Tone (NT)
  • Used to embellish a single or repeated chord-tone
  • May appear above or below the embellished tone

3
Non-Chord Tones
  • Consider the following example
  • Embellish this example with 1 PT and 1 NT
  • Rewrite notes to rhythmically reflect the added
    NCT
  • This exercise similar to Mini-HW 12

4
Non-Chord Tones
  • Step 1 identify likely places for each type of
    NCT
  • Passing tones fill the space between two
chord-tones, so find a place where there are two
    (different) adjacent chord-tones

5
Non-Chord Tones
  • Step 1 identify likely places for each type of
    NCT
  • Neighbor tones embellish a single or repeated
pitch, so find a place where a single chord-tone
    is repeated on consecutive beats

6
Non-Chord Tones
  • Step 2 add requested non-chord tones, rewriting
the melody to rhythmically reflect the added
    notes
  • NCTs typically appear on weaker parts of the
    beat
  • Circle and label added NCTs

7
Cadences
  • The term cadence refers to a melodic or harmonic
pattern that creates a sense of repose or
    resolution.
  • Cadences come at the end of phrases in music (at
the end of a piece, and usually in the middle at
    some point)
  • Cadences are defined by their harmonic patterns

Cadences
9
Cadences
  • Furthermore, there are two types of Authentic
cadences, which we label perfect and imperfect
  • Perfect Authentic Cadence (PAC) the progression
    V (or V7) ? I, with both chords in root-position,
and scale-degree 1 in the melody (upper voice)
    over the tonic chord
  • Imperfect Authentic Cadence (IAC) any authentic
    cadence that is not perfect
  • Scale-degree 1 is not in the melody over the
    tonic triad
  • Either V or I are not in root position
  • The progression viio ? I

10
Cadences
  • For the purposes of this class, we will use the
    following abbreviations
  • PAC (perfect authentic cadence)
  • IAC (imperfect authentic cadence)
  • PC (plagal cadence)
  • HC (half cadence
  • DC (deceptive cadence)

Aural Skills Unit Three
  • Rhythmic dictations involving syncopation and
    borrowed rhythms
  • Syncopation a momentary contradiction of the
prevailing meter or time signature, resulting in
the emphasis on the wrong part of the beat
  • Borrowed rhythms in simple or compound meter, a
single-beat rhythmic cell which commonly appears
    in other category
  • Commonly referred to as triplets or duplets

Aural Skills Unit Three
  • Syncopation
  • Borrowed Rhythms

Project 2 (Melodic Composition)

  • Rough draft due Wednesday, November 13
  • Description in course packet, p. 85
  • Two melodies, four measures each
  • Melody 1 E Major, 3 / 4, treble clef
  • Melody 2 G Minor, 6 / 8, bass clef

measure, then embellish with Non-chord tones
