Writing Process
  • STEP ONE Prewrite

Pick a topic . List 3-4 key ideas that go
with your topic. Development of ideas using
graphic organizers

STEP TWO Write your first draft
  • Organize your ideas into clear, organized
    paragraphs.
  • (Numbering the notes in the graphic
    organizer is a great idea before starting the
    draft.)
  • Skip lines, which makes editing and revising
    easier.
  • Have a good opening and closing sentence which
    makes the reader aware of the topic.

STEP THREE Revise your first draft.
  • Begin by PROOFREADING (aloud if possible) your
    first draft.
  • Listen to how it feels and what it sounds like.
  • Revising deals with the STRUCTURE of what you
    have written.
  • Consult with a peer editor.

STEP FOUR Edit your work.
  • In this step, you check to see if your writing
    LOOKS correct.
  • Check for the following
  • Complete sentences,
  • Capital letters,
  • Punctuation at the end of each sentence and
    wherever else it is needed,
  • Correct spelling,
  • A title that goes with my topic,
  • Run-on sentences or sentence fragments,

  • Unnecessary words that should be eliminated, or
    missing words that should be inserted,
  • Indent at the beginning of each paragraph,
  • Strong verbs,
  • Active tense,
  • Interesting adjectives that make the writing
    clear to the reader,
  • Cut the clutter Use just the right words to say
    exactly what you mean.

STEP FIVE Complete your final draft - Publish
  • Recopy or type the draft with all of the
    revisions and corrections.
