for the future

Introduction to NGS
  • The National Geodetic Survey
  • Defines and maintains the National Spatial
    Reference System
  • We define latitude, longitude, height, gravity
    and coastline
  • Provides access to the NSRS through geodetic
    control and online tools
  • Marks in the ground
  • Continuously Operating GPS receivers
  • Raster data (geoid grids, imagery, etc)

NGS supporting GIS
  • One Strength of GIS Coordinated layers
  • Consistent coordinates geodetic control
  • Key to all mapping activities, not just GIS
  • NGS provides this control as part of our mandate
  • Educating the mapping public on this topic is
important to NGS so GIS users know where their
    data really are!
  • OPUS-DB A neat idea but not yet policy
  • Allow non-geodetic data (positions of anything
youd find in a GIS into NGS database)
  • Will this be useful to the GIS community?
  • All GIS layer posters should show control as
    the foundation

GIS supporting NGS
  • Historically
  • NGS point data (coordinates of monuments) through
    Data Sheets
  • Clunky, non-graphic, text files
  • Future
  • NGS data slowly evolving into GIS-friendly
    formats (shapefiles, etc)
  • NGS partnering with GIS industry/software
developers to ensure GIS layers are accurately
    tied to geodetic control
  • GIS being used in more Web-based
data-distribution tools on NGS web page

Summary
  • NGS has a role to play in making GIS data
    accurate
  • GIS has a role to play in making NGS data more
    accessible
