• We define latitude, longitude, height, gravity
  and coastline
• Provides access to the NSRS through geodetic
  control and online tools
• Marks in the ground
• Continuously Operating GPS receivers
• Raster data (geoid grids, imagery, etc)

NGS supporting GIS

• One Strength of GIS Coordinated layers
• Consistent coordinates geodetic control
• Key to all mapping activities, not just GIS
• NGS provides this control as part of our mandate
• Educating the mapping public on this topic is
  important to NGS so GIS users know where their
  data really are!
• OPUS-DB A neat idea but not yet policy
• Allow non-geodetic data (positions of anything
  youd find in a GIS into NGS database)
• Will this be useful to the GIS community?
• All GIS layer posters should show control as
  the foundation
