Strange but True
  • In one year the PCUSA has raised 35 million
    dollars to help assist the recovery of gulf coast
    after Hurricane Katrina
  • Following the Tsunami in East Asia we raised 4
    million dollars to help the hurting
  • In the last four years we have disbursed 375,000
    to fight malaria thanks to the Presbyterian Women

  • Hurricane Katrina took the lives of 1,150 people
    35 million raised
  • The tsunami of 2004 took the lives of 200,000
    people - 4 million raised
  • Estimated death toll from malaria 2001-2005 in
    sub-Saharan Africa is 4.8 million people
    375,000 disbursed to fight malaria worldwide

Why the PCUSA?
  • To fight malaria it will take
  • Relationships
  • Accountability
  • Sustainability
  • In Africa this is the church . . . in Malawi this
    is the Presbyterian Church
  • If Americans are going to get involved in
    fighting malaria in Africa, they will have to
    work with churches.
  • We are the ones who can best relate the churches
    in Africa fighting malaria to people and
    organizations who want to help.

Exciting and True
  • There are more Presbyterians in Malawi than there
    are in the PCUSA
  • CCAP has 3 million members in a nation of 11
    million people
  • PCUSA has 2.3 million members in a nation of 281
    million people
  • These are our brothers and sisters in faith and
    tradition

  • Research is making great strides toward a vaccine
    there is hope
  • Our national government has dedicated over 1.2
    billion to fight malaria in five sub-Saharan
    nations Malawi is one
  • Rollback Malaria has made the disease a known
    challenge for the West
  • UNICEF working with PSI and denominations like
    the CCAP is distributing millions of bed nets for
    75 cents and no cost to pregnant women

The Challenge for a Special Committee called for
by 11-27
  • Someone will have to distribute a vaccine
  • Someone will need to manage the aid responsibly
  • Someone will need to educate and help insure
    gains continue
  • Someone will need to communicate the faces behind
    the disease
  • This is where we help
