Background to December 18th

• In 1997, Filipino and Asian migrant organisations
  began celebrating and promoting the 18th of
  December as the International Day of Solidarity
  with Migrants.
• This date was chosen because it was on 18th
  December 1990 that the United Nations adopted the
  International Convention on the Protection of the
  Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members of
  Their Families.
• In 2000, the UN General Assembly designated 18th
  December of each year as International Migrant's
  Day.

What is the International Convention on the
Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers
and Members of Their Families

• The Convention establishes the rights of migrant
  workers and aims to ensure that those rights are
  protected and respected
• It is a comprehensive international treaty from
  the United Nations
• The Convention sets standards which create a
  model for laws for individual States
• Governments of States which ratify or accede to
  the Convention undertake to adopt the necessary
  measures
