Assessing Learners and Learning We will be
covering
Competition and Assessment

2Introduction
- What is assessment for?
- What purpose does it serve?
The views you hold for the purpose of education
will determine how you assess your students. So
we must first take a look at the question What
is the purpose of education?
3Introduction
- Does this affect how we assess?

13Competition and Assessment
- Should we encourage competition in the classroom?
- Should we post grades of students?
14Competition and Assessment
- What are the pros and cons of competition?
15Competition and Assessment
- Where do we draw the line between competition
and recognizing outstanding achievement?
- Should we have an honor roll?
16Competition and Assessment
One View Competition, in classrooms as on
the athletic fields, could destroy childhood
and distort an entire lifetime. In an educational
institution there is no need for grading,
promotion, ranking, tracking, or labeling. A
tremendous burden would be removed if teachers
could teach without "evaluation," if people would
come to school to learn rather than for credit,
and if the sole motivation for learning would
become interest. (Campbell, 1974)
17Competition and Assessment
Another View There is no possibility of
isolating children from exposure to
competition. There will always be institutional
comparisons school assessments, secondary school
grading and streaming, tertiary entrance
selection methods, employment selection, etc. And
there will always be interpersonal competition.
There is no way to stop child A from saying to
child B, Ha ha ha, Ive got three
dollars/points/friends and youve only got
two. (http//www.fcs.vic.edu.au/docs/newsletter

18Competition and Assessment
- By encouraging competition in assessment are we
preparing them for the real world? Maybe we
should be purposefully introducing competition
into the classroom

QUIZ TIME!!
20Competition and Assessment
- How does competition affect the self-esteem of
children?

Standardized Testing
22Standardized Testing
23Standardized Testing
- Is standardized testing good or bad?
24Standardized Testing
- Do standardized tests accurately record student
achievement and knowledge?
The Debate!
- Pros versus Cons of standardized testing.
25Standardized Testing
- What did you learn from the debate?
- Now what do you really think?
26Standardized Testing
- Who has not taken a standardized test in either
elementary or secondary? Heres a memory
refresher..
27Standardized Testing
28Standardized Testing
- Have your opinions changed at all since the
beginning of class? - If you were against standardized testing did the
debate change your mind? - If you were for it, did taking the test change
your mind?
