GENERAL INFORMATION
  • The MGIB (for Active Duty Marines) program
    provides up to 36 months of education benefits.
    This benefit may be used for degree and
    certificate programs, flight training,
    apprenticeship/on-the-job training and
    correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency,
    and refresher courses may be approved under
    certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are
    payable for 10 years following your release from
    active duty . This program may also be referred
    to as Chapter 30.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ACTIVE DUTY MEMBERS
  • There are three categories
  • 1. Those who entered on active duty after
    June 30, 1985 and had their military pay reduced
    by 1,200. This amount is nonrefundable.
  • 2. Those veterans with remaining education
    entitlement under the old GI Bill on 12/31/89,
    who were on active duty for

ELIGIBILITY CONT.
  • any number of days during the period from
    10/19/84 to 6/30/85 and continued on active duty
    from 7/1/85 through 6/30/88. Military pay is not
    reduced for veterans qualifying under this
    category. These veterans may receive Chapter 30
    payment plus ½ of the old GI Bill payment.

ELIGIBILITY CONT
  • 3. Those veterans who originally declined to
    participate or who not eligible to participate in
    Chapter 30. If you were involuntarily separated
    from service after 2/2/91, you must have chosen
    to participate in Chapter 30 before military
    separation. If you voluntarily separated under
    SSB or VSI after 12/5/91, you may be eligible for
    Chapter 30.

MONTGOMERY GI BILL FOR SMCR
  • To qualify, you must meet the following
    requirements 1. Have a six-year obligation to
    serve in the Selected Reserve. 2. Complete your
    initial active duty for training (IADT). 3.
    Meet the requirement to receive a high school
    diploma or equivalency certificate before
    completing IADT.

SMCR MGIB
  • The MGIB for SMCR is different from the Active
    Duty GI Bill. Listed below are some of the
    characteristics of the SMCR GI Bill.
  • 1. The Selected Reserve benefit currently
    pays 282 per month for full time training.
  • 2. The Selected Reserve benefit must be
    used while you are actively drilling with your
    Guard/Reserve Unit. Once you leave Guard/Reserve
    Unit, your benefits end.

SMRC MGIB CONT.
  • 3. The Selected Reserve benefit program
    does not allow payment for reimbursement of the
    cost of Licensing and Certification Tests.
  • 4. The Selected Reserve Benefit program
    also doesnt allow Accelerated Payments for high
    tech courses.
  • 5. There is no out of pocket cost involved
    to sign up for the MGIB Selected Reserve benefits
    program.

SMRC MGIB CONT.
  • If a member of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve
    is activated for more then 2 years then he/she
    will have the option of participating in the
    Active Duty MGIB.
  • Selected Marine Corps Reserve members will have
    all of the benefits as Active Duty members.

MGIB KICKER
  • The MGIB Kicker is a program offered to military
    personnel who wish to increase the amount they
    will receive once they decide to start using the
    MGIB.
  • To get the MGIB Kicker a Marine must contribute
    an additional 600 to their MGIB.
  • There are 3 different ways Marines can pay for
    the MGIB Kicker.

KICKER PAYMENT OPTIONS
  • 1. A 600 lump sum payment can be made to
    Disbursing.
  • A down-payment can be made to Disbursing (Marines
    choice as to the amount of the payment). The
    remaining debt will be deducted from the Marines
    pay monthly (Marine will decide payment amount).
  • The Marine can choose to have the entire 600
    deducted from his/her pay (payment amount to be
    decided by the Marine).

MGIB KICKER CONT.
  • The kicker will be paid along with MGIB. The
    total amount added to your MGIB by the kicker is
    3,600. It is paid in 100 increments for up to
    36 months.
