The Beginning

• primitive, two wheeled vehicle, held together by
  raw hide and wooden pegs
• able to carry half-a-ton of material over any
  terrain
• originated in both French and Scottish traditions
• adapted well by having 2 high deeply dished
  wheels
• first used in Canada by meti to carry food around

The Design

• Best design of that era
• Light box mounted on a pair of shafts which were
  mounted on axles
• No device to stop people from bouncing
• Easy to pass through mud
• Shaped like a bowl to float

What they did for Canada

• open the great west
• building began in Canada in 1802
• Pulled by ox/horse
• Used to transport great quantities of food and
  imported goods

The Old to the New

• Old one smaller, pushed by an ox/horse, able to
  carry 450 pounds
• New one larger, able to carry twice as much

How They Traveled

• In dry weather they traveled in singular form
  which helped them to travel
• In wet weather they had to transport several
  abreast so it could pass through mud easier
