Title: Department of Developmental and Cell Biology

1
Department of Developmental and Cell Biology
  • The DCB Department offers
  • Bachelor of Science Programs in
  • Developmental and Cell Biology
  • Genetics
  • Plant Biology

2
Bachelor of ScienceDevelopmental and Cell Biology
  • PHILOSOPHY OF THE MAJOR
  • UCI has historically been very strong in
    Developmental Biology, particularly biological
pattern formation. The senior faculty are among
the leading members of the discipline and the
influx of new faculty members in the past five
years has built on the existing strengths.
  • The B.S. degree in Developmental and Cell Biology
is intended to capitalize on the faculty
strengths in Developmental and Cell Biology to
    provide a current, focused education.
  • WHAT WE HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THIS MAJOR
  • The B.S. in Developmental and Cell Biology is
intended to serve undergraduates who have a
strong interest in pursuing graduate study.

Bachelor of ScienceDevelopmental and Cell Biology
  • DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
  • The replacement of certain Bio Sci core course
with a broad choice of elective courses
  • The implementation of a new core course in
Genomic and Proteomic Analysis (145B) that will
be closely tied to problems in Genetics,
    Developmental and Cell Biology.
  • The opportunity for students to replace up to two
upper division laboratory courses with mentored
individual research (Bio 199, minimum 4
    units/quarter). Successful completion of
Excellence in Research program is required.

4
Bachelor of ScienceDevelopmental and Cell Biology
  • The combination of
  • more choice in approved electives
  • new upper division elective courses
  • option for mentored research
  • will help our students to develop an
appreciation of the nature of research and
establish a strong foundation for future success.

Bachelor of ScienceDevelopmental and Cell Biology
  • ADVANTAGES OF THE MAJOR
  • This major is intended to provide graduates with
advanced training in the skills necessary to
pursue graduate degrees in biomedical research.
  • These would include Ph.D. and MS training as well
    as combined MD/Ph.D. programs.
  • We also expect that our Developmental and Cell
Biology graduates to use their backgrounds
effectively in planning careers in medicine, law,
    business, education and public affairs.

6
Bachelor of ScienceGenetics
  • PHILOSOPHY OF THE MAJOR
  • Why a Genetics major? Quite simply, genetics
pervades every aspect of modern society from
newspaper articles to television talk shows, from
discussions on health care to discussions on
cloning. Moreover, with the sequencing of the
human genome, it is more important than ever for
biology students to have a broad background in
the study of heredity and evolution.
  • The Genetics major will provide graduates with
advanced training in the skills necessary to
pursue graduate degrees in biomedical research.
These would include Ph.D. graduate programs,
    teacher-training programs, medical school and
veterinary school. We also expect that our
Genetics graduates will use their backgrounds
effectively in planning careers in law, business,
    education and public affairs.

Bachelor of ScienceGenetics
  • WHAT WE HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THIS MAJOR
  • The major hopes to benefit highly motivated
undergraduates who have a particular interest in
    learning about developmental, evolutionary and
molecular genetics. In addition, the major is
designed to allows students to explore how our
knowledge of genetic mechanisms contributes to
our understanding of human development and
    disease.
  • In addition to providing advanced training for
our motivated students, the curriculum is
intended to expose these students to our faculty
early in their careers and often. The resulting
    close interaction between undergraduate students
and faculty enriches the educational environment
    on both sides.

Bachelor of ScienceGenetics
  • DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
  • Development of a new core course in Genomic and
    Proteomic Analysis (145B)
  • The major allows for the opportunity to replace
up to two upper division laboratory courses with
mentored individual research (Bio 199, minimum 4
    units/quarter). Participation in Excellence in
    Research program is required.
  • The Genetics major requires two upper division
Genetics courses (Bio 137A and 137B) and two
elective courses with topics such as the
molecular biology of cancer, human genetic
diseases, developmental genetics and the genetics
    of aging.
  • Students in the Genetics major will be a part of
    the "Genetics Community" at UCI.

9
Bachelor of ScienceGenetics
  • ADVANTAGES OF THE MAJOR
  • Students graduating with a B.S. in Genetics will
be well-tooled to pursue graduate training.
  • Those students who pursue medical school training
will enter medical school with a unique
understanding of molecular and classical genetics
certain to enhance their medical training.
