2History of Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps
- Created in 2002 by local physicians as the
Bio-Terrorism Medical Action Team (B-MAT).
Became Medical Reserve Corps shortly thereafter - Organized by National Incident Management System
(NIMS) - 3,500 volunteers goal of 13,000
- Staffed by five (5) Health Dept. employees.
- Member of Citizen Corps Council
- Feedback and advice through Fairfax MRC
Leadership Council - Mission Dispense medication to population of
Fairfax County in an emergency - Worst case scenario multiple outbreaks, or mass
vaccination of all 1.2 million Fairfax County
residents within 3-5 days

Network
- Created by Roam Secure, Inc., MRCAN launched in
Spring of 2004 (www.fairfaxmrc.org) - Online system that managed volunteer contact
information, communication, participation and
program analysis - Text alert capability via e-mail, cell phones,
pagers and BlackBerrys - Volunteer response tracking
- Flexibility to track training completion dates
and temporary/seasonal questions
4A New MRCAN
- Fairfax MRC made best use of off-the-shelf RSAN
product but our program was growing fast - Partnership with Roam Secure in 2005 to develop
and implement an enhanced base of MRCAN to
include - Volunteer application process
- Self-management of teams by volunteer leaders
- New training capabilities
- Resource management
- Automated team assignments
- Geo-Spatial alerting
- Quick creation of Identification badges
Our goal was to make the website a place
volunteers want to visit rather than a place

- New volunteers must submit an online application
to the system - Exclusion based logic imbedded into the
application process - Application can be tailored to multiple roles
- Utilizes logic in the system that presents
question based upon answers given by prospective
volunteers - Only accepted volunteers will be able to log in
to the system - Administrators have the option of declining or
accepting the volunteer
