Newtonian Synthesis Background

• Newton discovered gravitation to be present
  everywhere on Earth
• Falling apple story is false, but he did
  correlate falling objects to the moon falling
  around the Earth
• a. he noticed the moon circled the Earth
• b. he knew circular motion required a force
• c. he named the force gravity!

• He stated that if the apple is attracted to the
  Earth, then the Earth must be attracted to the
  apple
• (3rd Law of Motion)
• Using his laws and a few theories, Newton stated
  this would work for any two objects in the
  universe and therefore stated gravitation is
  universal
