THE ART OF FLOWING

  • Lewiston, Idaho

2
Why Flow?
  • In order to respond to arguments by your
opponents, you must be able to write them down so
that you can remember them and respond to them in
    order.
  • A speaking outline.
  • A record of the debate round.

3
Flowing Guidelines/Suggestions
  • Dont be afraid to use paper!
  • Paper is cheap wins arent.
  • Use plain white typing paper (legal size 8 ½ X
    14).
  • Start by drawing columns for each speech.
  • Flow only on one side of your paper.
  • Flow the length of the paper, not the width.
  • Leave space between each argument to allow for
development as the debate round progresses.
  • Flow top to bottom, left to right. Each
speakers arguments should flow vertically, with
each line of argumentation flowing horizontally.
  • Use two different colors of pen (typically
black/blue and red). Pick pens that move
    smoothly and do not smear.

4
Flowing Guidelines/Suggestions (cont.)
  • Flow in a language with which youre familiar.
    (Thanks again, Skip!)
  • Use shorthand. Develop a system of abbreviating
    that you use consistently.
  • Make sure to print legibly.
  • Use structuring, with labeling and indentation.
  • Flow one major set of arguments per sheet of
    paper (disads, procedurals, counterplan)
    separate from case flow(s).
  • Dont be afraid to re-order the arguments/flow
    sheets to prioritize them.
  • Never give up during the round. Just start again
    and get whatever you can.
  • Flow anything you can lectures, the news, talk
shows, other debates in which you are not
debating, etc. Practice so that you can develop
a system that works for you adapt and change!
