2- What? When? Where?
- Art Nouveau (New Art) was an international style
of decoration and architecture which developed in
the 1880s and 1890s and was popular until the
1920s and 1930s. - The movement began in Paris and spread
throughout Europe and America. It was called
different names in different countries.
3Hector Guimard (Paris Metro)
- Why?
- A new group of artists wanted to invent a style
of art which would make use of new materials.
Architects wanted to experiment with glass and
iron which allowed them to make use of curved
lines, rather than the straight, solid forms that
had been used in the past.
4- Artists were influenced by Eastern Art (from
China and Japan) which made use of swerving lines
and bold simplification.

6Style
- Although the style of Art Nouveau varied
slightly from country to country, in general it
can be recognised by the use of flowing lines
based on natural forms. Plants, flowers , shells
and animals were all sources of inspiration for
designers
7- The style influenced all kinds of design from
illustration, to architecture, interior design,
furniture, graphic design and jewellery.
8What materials do you think have been used to
make these?
