Title: All that Glitters

1
All that Glitters
  • The discovery of Diamonds and Gold in South Africa

2
The 1860s
  • The shiny pebble picked up on Schalk van
Niekerks farm near Hopetown had an enormous
effect on the future of South Africa.
  • The stone finally made its way to Richard
Southey, Colonial Secretary of the Cape who
    exclaimed
  • This diamond is the rock upon which the future
of South Africa will be built!
  • What did he mean?

3
The year was 1867!
  • Although it was to be a few more years before
the scramble for diamonds became a stampede, it
marked a major turning point in SAs development.
  • The area would change from a rural backwater to a
fountain of riches that would affect nearly
    everybody living in SA.

4
One year later
  • Colesberg Kopje was already on its way to
    becoming the
  • BIG HOLE
  • Each claimant set up his own pulley to extract
    the diamond-bearing ore

5
The Big Hole
  • Using your atlas, find the location of the Big
    Hole
  • Now, see if you can find any pictures of miners
staking their claim. Work in pairs.
  • Can anyone find a picture of the Big Hole in
    Kimberley?

6
Listening exercise
  • There was a series of programmes on the radio
about events that changed the course of history
in SA. One of the programmes in the series was
called Diamond Fever and was about the discovery
    of diamonds.
  • Close all books now, fold your arms and listen
carefully. There will be some questions that will
follow. I will read the questions to you first
    and then the script.
  • Here goes.
