  • Sisters of Bon Secours arrived in West Baltimore
    in 1881
  • Bon Secours Hospital opened in 1919
  • In 1994, formed department to work w/ SW Balt.
    community-based organizations
  • Formed the Operation ReachOut Steering Committee
    in 1994

Operation ReachOut Southwest
  • A community-driven coalition w/ a
    multi-dimensional approach to neighborhood
    revitalization
  • Created implementing a comprehensive social,
    economic physical development reinvestment
    strategy
  • Completed a comprehensive revitalization plan in
    1998 w/ participation from over 250 residents
    local stakeholders
  • The plan includes a vision statement, desired
    outcomes strategies in six issue areas
    economic development, education, health, physical
    planning, public safety, and enriching activities
    for youth and seniors.

  • 1997- Bon Secours Community Leaders Decided to
    Develop a Community Improvement Plan
  • 1997- Opened Family Support Center Womens
    Resource Center

  • 1999- Began Youth Adult Employment Programs
  • 2003- Our Money Place Opened
  • 2007- Aggregate Accomplishments
  • Over 500 Units of Housing Completed
  • Over 500 People Obtained Employment
  • Over 30 of YEEP Youth Entered College
  • Over 1,000 Credit Union Accounts Opened
  • Over 5 million in Earned Income Credit/Tax
    Returns Received

What We Have Learned
  • We have learned that successful initiatives are
    resident led and community driven - through the
    OROSW coalition we have set up a decision making
    infrastructure that ensures meaningful resident
    participation in planning and implementation.

What We Have Learned
  • We have also learned that success is more certain
    when you reverse thinking from addressing
    deficits in the community to building upon
    assets. A major part of what we do is to attract
    resources and then leverage that investment to
    attract more resources.

    accumulation financial security

    improved employment
  • Opportunity for retirement at age 65 w/ more than

    be paid off in a reasonable period of time
