5
Links to the Five Practices
  • Model the Way by clarifying their own goals and
style as a leader and using that knowledge to
form a working relationship with their equine
partner as they perform a variety of basic tasks.
  • Inspire a Shared Vision by clarifying their
objectives and finding a way of communicating
that to their equine partner so that they jointly
    achieve their objective.
  • Challenge the Process by confronting established
patterns in their own approach to leadership and
their basic beliefs to find new ways to work with
a constituent their horse! and overcome their
own fears to challenge themselves and their
equine partner to achieve progressively more
    challenging tasks.

6
Links to the Five Practices
  • Enable Others to Act by discovering ways to
enable their horse to work with progressively
less direct input from their human partner,
through a process of trust building and
non-verbal communication to achieve a variety of
    tasks
  • Encourage the Heart by determining how their
equine partner wants to be recognized and
acknowledged and finding consistency in their own
approach as a leader, so that clear messages are
sent as to what behaviours are desired and how
much their partners success is appreciated.

7
Emotional Intelligence
  • The ability to be aware of, to name and to work
effectively with the full range of emotions that
we experience as we try to lead
  • The ability to be able to read, interpret and
    respond to emotions in others
  • Multiple research studies have linked EI to
success and effectiveness as a leader
  • In the Activities, participants experience and
deal with emotions in real time not a
simulation and learn how to interpret them and
    adapt their leadership approach accordingly

8
People, Horses and Emotions
  • A horse doesn't care how much you know until he
    knows how much you care.
  • Pat Parelli

9
Natural Horsemanship Principles
  • Like leadership concepts there are many different
    practitioners
  • It all boils down to effective communication -
    clear consistent
  • It requires attitude, knowledge experience
  • Like leadership it may appear simple, but
something that is simple is not necessarily easy
