Title: New PPT Slides for the Mary Crowley
1Scientific and Prevention Advisory Council (SPAC)
Final Report
- Integrated council of 20 cancer health care
leaders selected from broad areas of expertise
(patient advocacy, prevention, hospital
administration, business, science, surgery,
pediatrics and oncology) - Located in broad geographic regions of Texas
- Selected by oversight subcommittee of Dr. Joe
Bailes, Cindy Brinker Simmons and Lionel Sosa
2SPAC Addressed 7 Issues
- Areas of priority
- Areas of research need
- A plan for drug and IP development which will
expedite commercialization - A broad representative pool of grant reviewers
- Education programs
- A separate prevention initiative
- Definition of measures of production

4As an overall direction for CPRIT investment
SPAC recommends that CPRIT move beyond (and not
duplicate) current NIH funding approaches and
formulate innovative collaborative relationships
between business, academia, private institutes,
community practice and not for profit centers
within Texas to carry out focused research
directives with immediate or short return to
clinical application.
5SPAC feels it will be necessary to establish
shared statewide resources such as malignant/non
malignant tissue banks, biomolecular technology
analysis infrastructure, clinical database,
biostatistics/bioinformatics, genomic and
chemical libraries, GMP regulatory/quality
assurance, preclinical, manufacturing and
clinical testing infrastructure necessary to meet
FDA standards for preventive, diagnostic and
clinical product approval.
6These shared services need to be established in a
way so as to provide, in time, independent
revenues to complement philanthropic and tax
payer support and to maximize the chance for
commercial product development and pharmaceutical
relocation to Texas.
7Effective communication systems and management
coordination will need to be established enabling
rapid transfer and translation of information to
the investigators, community and CPRIT institute.
8The consensus among SPAC is for a focus involving
the basic cellular, molecular and immunologic
biology of cancer and to translate this into new
methods for prevention, early detection and the
treatment of cancer.
9- Such a focus will allow us to establish a process
to - Implement new methods of identifying Texans at
the highest risk of developing cancer, and to
communicate preventive cancer measures - Enable our scientists to be able to construct
molecular signal maps within cancer and to define
biorelevant interactions that will allow
personalized directions for cancer diagnostics
and therapy - Not only cure cancer, but where applicable and of
greater probability, to manage cancer as a
chronic disease (similar to hypertension and/or
diabetes) 100 survivability
