Title: Voice Activated Chess Clock

Voice Activated Chess Clock
  • Matt Blake, Jacob Crandall,
  • Curtis Nielsen

2
Why Our Project ROCKS!
  • Instead of pushing a button to end a turn in
chess, a user can now say a pre-recorded word to
    end their turn.
  • Useful for those who may have lost a limb but
still desire to play speed chess.
  • (They have voice activated chess boards)

3
How The Clock Works
  • Players record end turn sounds
  • Players record time setting sounds
  • Game of chess begins
  • When finished with a turn say the end turn sound.
  • A players remaining time will elapse until they
    finish their turn.
  • A player wins when they checkmate their opponent
or their opponent runs out of time.

4
The Voice Direct 364 chip
  • 3-modes for word recognition
  • Speaker Dependent
  • Single word continuous listening
  • Multi-word continuous listening
  • We use multi-word continuous listening with the
    following words
  • Yo
  • Time Clear, Up, Down, Up 5, Down 5
  • Mama

Wired Voice Direct Chip
7
LCD Output
  • 8-7 segment LCDs
  • 4 BCD to 7-segment decoders
  • Input from microcontroller
  • Lots of wires.

Putting It All Together
11
Challenges
  • Needed 35 output, 10 input pins only have 40
    pins.
  • Wire both displays to the same input pins.
  • Alternate which players remaining time is sent.
  • Voice recognition.
  • Recording includes background noise
  • Words must not only be the same, but be said the
    same.
  • Record and use in the same environment.
  • SilencePlease!

12
More Challenges
  • End game speaker.
  • Toggled an output pin to create a tone on a
    speaker.
  • Created a circuit so the speaker was loud enough
    without drawing too much current.
  • Pins broke in the voice chip connectors
  • Bought a second voice chip.

13
The Final Challenge
  • Getting it in the Phone book
  • Cutting out the phone book
  • Supplying Power
  • Making everything fit (without disturbing the
    delicate wiring)
  • The requirement Patience

14
Demo
15
Conclusions
  • Integrated voice chip, microcontroller, and
    output devices.
  • Learned about circuit construction and
    microcontroller programming.
  • Built a voice activated chess clock that works
    more or less!

16
Problems To Work On
  • Main Problem
  • Voice recognition not perfect
  • Better chip
  • Minor Problems
  • Better end game sound. (A victory cheer or taunt)
