Title: TT9 : AMMA downstream AugSep 2006, Dakar Senegal

1
TT9 AMMA  downstream Aug-Sep 2006, Dakar
(Senegal)
  • Key weather systems in the West African and
    Tropical Atlantic regions.
  • Solid line represents a streamline at the level
of the AEJ around 600hPa, its undulation
    represents an AEW.
  • Grey shading represents peak rainfall associated
    with MCSs and
  • yellow shading indicates the location of the SAL.

Tropical cyclogenesis frequency

TT9 goals
  • To investigate the synoptic environment (monsoon
flow, AEJ, Saharan Air Layer , easterly waves,
upper troposphere, ) and the dynamic,
    thermodynamic and microphysical characteristics
of West African MCSs arriving over the warm
waters of the eastern tropical Atlantic ocean
  • To compare with the observed characteristics of
continental MCSs near Niamey during AMMA SOP-B
    (July), C (August) and D (1-15 Sep)
  • To contribute to the understanding of the key
processes, at the synoptic and meso- scle,
    involved in tropical cyclogenesis

6
TT9 Projects
  • Senegal LPAO DMN (Dakar C-band and Linquere
    S-band radars raingauges ) (operational)
  • AMMA-SOP radiosounding network (planned)

SOP-E (CNRS-CNES) 15 30 SEP 2006 PIs D.
Bouniol F. Roux
Falcon-20 with RALI (cloud Radar - Lidar
combination), in-situ mf probes (FSSP/2D-C/2D-P)
and dropsondes.
As SOP-D in coordination with ground-based

SOP-E (CNRS-CNES)PIs D. Bouniol F. Roux
Falcon-20 with RALI (cloud Radar - Lidar
combination), in-situ mf probes (FSSP/2D-C/2D-P)
and dropsondes.
14
NOAA Annual Hurricane Field Program  PIs J
Dunion, S. Aberson
Example of 8-h dropwindsonde sampling
mission dedicated to a developing tropical
disturbance with the NOAA G-IV based in Barbados
15
Driftsondes (NCAR-CNES)PI D Parsons
The driftsonde flights, from NDjamena / Chad,
will provide synoptic-scale high-vertical-resoluti
on atmospheric profiles made by the GPS
dropsondes. The balloon flies at an altitude of
16 kilometers. The gondola can carry up to 20 of
the current GPS aircraft dropsondes that can be
dropped at predetermined times by computer or on
command through a satellite link.
16
 AMMA Seedling Hurricane Experiment
ASHE (Aerosonde, NOAA, NCAR, Georgia Tech)PI
G Holland
  • Aerosondes
  • - Observations in the lower atmosphere close
    to the ocean surface
  • Meso- and larger scale observations of the
environment in which seedling hurricane develop

17
 AMMA downstream  logistics
  • FR/FA-20 US/Citation aircraft will be based in
    Dakar-Yoff international airport
  • N-Pol about 50 km SE of Dakar
  • Aerosondes launch site and control center ?
  • Forecast requirements ( 24h advice for A/C )
  • METEOSAT images ? MCSs propagation
  • WRF forecasts in LPAO Howard Univ, NCEP
    TC-genesis products
  • Communication with NOAA HFP for G-IV operations
