Suffixes

  • There are two kinds of suffixes.
  • One kind, inflectional suffixes, can be added
to nouns to change the number and to verbs to
change the tense or to adjectives to change the
degree of comparison (see chart on next slide.)

6
Inflectional Suffixes

  • My daughter seems to be defiant when I
specifically ask her to do something.
  • The word defiant is made up of
  • the suffix -ant, which means inclined to and
the base word defy, which means
  • resist. By combining the meaning of the
  • two, the reader can determine that
  • the meaning for defiant
  • is one who is inclined to resist.

14
  • For example
  • February 3rd was the coldest day of the year, so
    far.

15
  • February 3rd was the coldest day of the year,
    so far.
  • The word coldest is made up of
  • the base word cold and the suffix -est, which
changes the degree to most. By combining the
    meaning of the
  • two, the reader can determine that
  • the meaning for coldest
  • is the most cold.

16
  • Now it s your turn
  • It was hard to find a hotel vacancy in the
    crowded city.
  • (Practice independently
  • and then discuss how
  • you arrived at the
  • meaning.)

17
  • It was hard to find a hotel vacancy in the
    crowded city.
  • The word vacancy is made up of the base word
vacant meaning not occupied, and the suffix
-ancy, meaning state or quality of. By
combining the meaning of the two, the reader can
determine that the meaning for vacancy is the
    state of being unoccupied.
