- In early 1800s, the idea of constructing
buildings with metal framing became very popular.
- In the mid 1800s, Lord and Burnham Company from
New York was well known for constructing
iron-and-glass conservatories in the United
States. - Dec. 1891 Hitching Co formatted the general
layout of the conservatory and created the idea
of a glass-and-iron plant and propagating house
Offered to execute the entire plan at
approximately 26,000 - Jan. 1892 Geo. C. Pape, representative from Lord
and Burnham Co., New York started contacting
Prof. Hilgard. The company offered to build the
greenhouse in glass and wood at 20,000 - The Joint Committee hired Lord and Burnham Co. to
build the University greenhouse with
iron-and-glass.

the Committee on Grounds and Buildings seemed to
favor bidders with the lowest bids rather than
their job qualification - Apr. 1894 all bids are settled

J.H.C. Bonte reported to Governor H.H. Markham - The University is building a plant house. The
lowest bid for heating apparatus was not
satisfactory. The Board of Regents therefore
rejected the lowest bid and accepted the bid of
the Lord Burnham Co., all of which is fully
stated in the Report of the Committee herewith
enclosed Bonte, 1984 - Governor approved the project, and soon after,
all the materials are shipped from New York to UC
Berkeley to construct the conservatory.
