Guthrie, Oklahoma By Missy Lutz
Lazy E Ranch Inc.
Treat Sick Horses
Before any other chores are done on the horses
and foals in the sick list must either receive
medication or be checked on. Medication could
range from giving a penicillin shot to taking a
foals temperature or merely checking on the
animal during the night.
The Lazy E Ranch opened its gates in the fall of
1984, and since that time has been actively
involved in both the Quarter Horse and
Thoroughbred racing industries. Approximately
2,000 horses pass through the Lazy E Ranch gates
each year and in 1999, the Lazy E bred over 600
mares. The Lazy E Ranch prepares over 500 head of
sale horses each year and proudly represents them
at various sales throughout the United States.
The Ranch
The Individuals (Indies)
Foals are watched carefully. There are always
horses coming and going on the ranch 24 hours a
day. If foals are not responding to medication
then they are placed on fluids. This little guy
had to have fluids every hour until he got well.
The Stallion Annex
The ranch is situated on 300 rolling acres and
includes a 65,000 square foot mare barn, 116
stalls, three foaling stalls, an indoor arena, 40
individual stalls with adjoining runs, turn out
paddocks, the capability to accommodate 120 mares
under lights, housing for 14 stallions, and 15
miles of PVC fencing.

Foaling Attendant Duties
Foal Mares
There are almost 90 stalls in the mare barn and
during the busiest part of the breeding season
they are all full. The foaling attendants must
walk the barn every 1-2 hours to check every
horse. Any animals looking sick are noted. Any
sick foals are temped and written on the board.
Foaling the mares was the primary responsibility
of the foaling attendant. The mares are placed
inside the mare barn in a roping arena located in
the middle of the mare barn. At times there
could be up to 40 mares in the arena to watch.
Clean Breeding Lab
Breeding begins in February and the chores
pickup. The outside the lab must be power washed
each night and the cabinets cleaned off. Inside
the lab the days dishes must be done and the
cabinets cleaned off.
Contacts
The stocks and outside the lab must be power
washed every night no matter how cold it gets.
