2The Sea Ghost of Sable Island
I found this story in Maritime Mysteries and
Edith Moser Mysteries from her book Haunted. It
was September 1856 when the brigantine Alma, out
bound for new York and heading to St. Johns,
Newfoundland, was stranded about half a mile out
on the treacherous shores of Sable island. A
life-saving crew from the island station but ran
into seas so heavy the boat capsized before it
could reach the stranded craft. The bow oarsman
was throw over board and drowned. His body was
never found.

3On December 7 of the same year, another vessel,
the schooner Eliza Ross from Sydney, got in
trouble off Sable Island. The lifeboat crew,
using the same lifeboat, again set out to attempt
a rescue. As they rowed toward the distressed
schooner the men saw something in the water like
a head of a man swimming. It was just about where
they had their accident on their last mission. As
they rowed closer they saw it was a man, but with
eyes they have never seen vacant, staring eyes
fixed on the distant horizon. Whatever it was it
stopped at the side of the boat and climbed
aboard dripping it took the vacant seat, grasped
the oars and help row toward the stranded vessel.
This time the crew had better luck and were able
to save the sailors on the doomed schooner. They
pulled for shore, with the strange wild-eyed
figure doing his share of rowing along with the
others.

4When they reached the spot where he had boarded
he dropped the oars and slide over the side and
vanished beneath the waves. The last thing the
startled crew saw was the staring eyes as the
waves washed over the strange creatures
head. This ghost supposedly appeared several
times to the same life-saving crew, but never
attempted to enter the boat after a new man took
the place of the drowned oarsman Some said they
had seen it, others denied there was nothing
there to seen. But all admitted to the feeling of
their drowned friend in the boat with them.

5The hitch Hiker Ghost
This story is also from Maritime Mysteries and
there is a similar story in Janet and Colin
Bords Unexplained Mysteries. So lets start the
story. The night sky was an explosion of stars
when a young biker said goodbye to his girlfriend
and headed down the highway. He lived by a strict
rule----Never stop for a hitchhiker unless its
an emergency. So why did he stop for the young
woman why seemed to appear out of nowhere? Its
as if he didnt have a choice. He waited until
she strapped on the extra helmet before heading
back down the highway. Some miles later he felt
her release his waist. When he pulled over to
check the young woman was gone. However the
helmet was strapped securely to the seat.

6When he arrived at the next town, he told several
waitresses in a fast food restaurant what had
happened. They listened politely, and when he was
finished his story, they told him what he had
experienced was nothing new that other drivers
had had similar experiences. One such driver was
a middle-age man, who stopped his car for a woman
late one night, and after driving fifteen
minutes, turned to speak to her and she was gone!
He reported what had happened to the police, and
his story was reported in the press. That story
was read by a man who claimed his girlfriend had
been run over and killed in the same location.
When the driver was shown a picture of the young
women, confirmed that she was the one he had
given a ride to. So next time your out for a ride
and you see someone on the side of the road what
will you do wellHave a nice ride.
