Back to Basics for a minute or 2
Why should we bother about safety? The simple
(and most often forgotten) answer is
  • We are soft bodied animals and we break easily!
  • - not armour plated
  • - not bullet proof
  • - people (esp. young men) need constant reminding.
  • Throughout our lives we encounter forces
    stronger than
  • we are.

Safety is nothing more than ensuring these forces
are under our control.
6
  • But
  • The human species has evolved successfully
  • because we are risk-takers!
  • it is in our nature to confront danger head on!

At work, Society demands we behave differently
  • A Safety Management System is required to
    control inappropriate risk-taking at work

7
So what is a Safety Management System?
  • Safety
  • Safety is a simple formula, described in 6 words
  • identify the hazard,
  • control the hazard.
  • Incidentally, if people were good at this we
wouldnt need the Management or the System.

Management Creating a working environment for
people to achieve excellent results
System Interconnection of separate parts
contributing to a predictable outcome.
8
Hazard Management
  • The four key elements in Hazard Management are
  • 1. Identify the hazards
  • 2. Assess the risks associated with each hazard
  • 3. Put controls in place to reduce the risks to
    an acceptable level
  • 4. Have recovery plans in place if there is a
    loss of control
  • Now I can finish the job

Identify the hazard Control the hazard
