2MISSION STATEMENT
- To promote institutional and personal
environmental responsibility within the school
community. As well as encourage practices
consistent with sustainable living including but
not limited to conservation of resources, waste
reduction and recycling, pollution prevention,
increased reliance on renewable resources, and to
recommend priorities for projects that may help
the school district reduce its environmental
impact.
3HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
- The first organizational meeting took place in
the Fall of 2006 - Teachers, support staff and administrators who
demonstrated a passion for the Greening of our
district were invited by our superintendent to
this inaugural meeting - This small group took the message back to their
individual buildings - The Green Team has expanded each year more
teachers support staff community members were
added and then representatives from each PTO or
PTA came on board in the fall of 2007 - Every school in the district now has an
ecology club
including all of our elementary
schools

efficiency program in December 2005 when the
school board passed a formal energy policy and an
incentive program to share savings with
individual schools

12ENERGY MANAGEMENT
- Council Rock School District has been actively
managing their energy consumption since December
of 2005 - Through changes in the daily operation of every
building across the district - Council Rock has reduced their annual consumption
of electricity and fossil fuels by nearly 40. - This award winning energy management program has
greatly contributed to the financial and
environmental goals of the school district
13ENERGY MANAGEMENT
- Council Rock Gains National Recognition for
Energy Conservation - Awarded ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year 2008 for
success in energy management in 2007 - Four students traveled to Washington, DC with a
group of administrators, teachers and staff to
accept the award on behalf of the district - Read more about this prestigious award at

22ENERGY SAVING CONTEST IN CR
- Each school in the district will compete against
one another to decrease their energy usage by the
largest percentage from March 1st through the end
of May - The starting point for each building will be
provided by Tom Schneider (head of facilities) - The percentages will be computed when the time
period is over and a winner announced
23ENERGY SAVING CONTEST IN CR What are we playing
for?
- Bragging rights and public recognition from the
BOSS - (no, not that BOSS--our boss)
- Saving kilowatt hours of electricity
- therefore conserving energy
- Reducing CO2 emissions
- thus helping the environment
- Saving money from the budget

- Did you know that simply changing the margins of
your paper before you print from 1.25 (the
default) to .75 will result in 4.75 less paper
used? - For a single ton of paper, thats equivalent to
19 reams, which is equivalent to 1.14 trees.
Thats roughly equal to about 47.50 per ton of
paper - It all adds up
- You can check out the math at http//www.changeth

38GO GREEN ACTIVITY Paper Purge
WHEN April in-service day (22nd), approximately
1 hour (1PM to 2PM) WHAT Purge your filing
cabinets, clean out those boxes you never
unpacked from the renovation. This is your chance
to do some spring cleaning in celebration of CR
going Green. GOAL To see which IPC has the most
paper to recycle by volume. A multiplier will be
used for the smaller departments. For example the
3rd floor IPC east has 20 members whereas IA has
5 members therefore their boxes will be
multiplied by 4. PRIZES 1) Department with the
most recyclable paper wins a free department
breakfast. That is the total volume of recyclable
paper per IPC and all of the principals (as one
IPC). 2) Person who finds the oldest piece of
paper to recycle wins a prize, must have a date.
3) Person who finds the most non-school related
piece of paper to recycle wins a prize. JUDGES
Green Team leaders for each department will
submit their totals to Sue McCarthys office.

47PLASTIC BAGS
- To Whom it May Concern,
- I am writing today to ask you to help pass a
resolution that would ban the use of plastic bags
in our state. Plastic bags are an unnecessary
environmental hazard since many eco-friendly
options exist like paper or canvas shopping bags. - Every year, 15 billion pounds of plastic are
produced in the U.S., but only 1 billion are
recycled. At a time where many people are trying
to find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
we are collectively using about 12 million
barrels of oil to produce the plastic bags that
are used each year. Many of these bags end up on
the streets and sidewalks or caught in tree
branches. Others wind up in rivers and streams,
where they are washed out to sea. - Once these bags end up in the oceans, they join
other types of plastic trash from around the
world and are often swept up in currents to make
its way to enormous whirling eddies of trash. The
largest, near Hawaii, is more than a thousand
miles across and contains more plastic than
plankton. Plastic bags and other bits of floating
debris are mistaken for food by seabirds,
turtles, and other marine life. Up to 1 million
seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles
die each year as a result of plastic debris. - We can break ourselves of the plastic bag habit.
Some governments and retailers have begun taking
steps to phase out plastic bags. San Francisco
banned them in 2007, and several countries have
either banned or taxed the use of plastic bags.
Whole Foods announced plans to drop plastic bags
by Earth Day, 2008, and gives customers a small
discount if they bring their own bags. - I hope that our state can be another shining
example of environmental responsibility. I
encourage you to take a stand and add our state
to the growing list of areas that are banning
plastic bags. - Thank You.
48COMMUNITY LETTER

- The Council Rock School District in Bucks
County, PA is leading the effort for schools, in
