What is Creationism?
  • Despite many people's tendency to think of all
creationists in one group and all evolutionists
in another, "creationism" refers to a wide range
    of beliefs

What Is Evolution?
  • "In the broadest sense, evolution is merely
change... is change in the properties of
populations of organisms that transcend the
lifetime of a single individual... Biological
evolution may be slight or substantial it
embraces everything from slight changes in the
proportion of different alleles within a
population to the successive alterations that led
from the earliest proto-organism to snails, bees,
    giraffes, and dandelions."

    Sinauer Associates 1986

Evolution
  • There are actually two categories of
    evolutionists
  • -Darwinian Evolutionists
  • Non-Darwinian Evolutionists

10
Why All the Debate?
  • Some evolutionary Scientists believe that there
is such a debate over evolution because most
non-scientific people do not understand the true
    meaning of evolution.
  • evolution is simply "a process that results in
heritable changes in a population spread over
many generations" yet most people do not
understand this. They believe that evolution is
    simply an anti-religion theory.

11
Why All the Debate ? Cont.
  • Scientists think that if the public could
understand this meaning, much of the debate
    between evolutionists and creationists would
    disappear.
  • Scientists are trying to prove that all people
who believe in Evolution are not necessarily
    atheists

What Happened in the Past
  • In the past, dating back to the 1920s, Evolution
was not taught in schools, and was in fact
    illegal in many states.
  • One such famous example was in the famous Scopes
trial of 1925, which challenged the Tennessee law
    banning the teaching of Evolution.

13
The Scopes Trial
  • A Tennessee Biology teacher , John Scopes, was
put on trial for teaching Darwins theory of
    Evolution.
  • Clarence Darrow was assigned to defend him with
William Jennings Bryan being the lead prosecutor,
and expert witness on the Bible.

14
The Scopes Trial Cont.
  • In the end Scopes was convicted and fined, but
the ruling was later overturned by a higher
    court.
  • As a result many other states (all but two)
dropped their anti-evolution laws from the law
    books.

Our Belief
  • We believe that in order to give children a
comprehensive education, both evolution as well
as Devine Theory should be taught, and neither
should be discounted, however neither should be
    enforced as a belief.

17
Why?
  • We feel this way because this method has many
    advantages
  • Students get all the facts
  • Students are given the chance to make decisions
    on their own.
