Aircraft Service Center Processes
Presentation 12
2
What can a Service Center do for you?
  • Develop STC for non-group aircraft
  • Covered in another presentation
  • Apply SL/SB/STC on group aircraft
  • We will discuss here
  • Assist in obtaining operational approval
  • Additional services ranging from one stop shop
    to a handshake

3
What is a group?
  • Group aircraft that are of nominally
identical design and build with respect to all
details that could influence the accuracy of
    height keeping performance

4
How do you verify your aircraft qualifies as a
group participant?
  • Evaluate any existing modifications
  • Assure static system conforms
  • Assure avionics meet group standards
  • Assure systems are operating within tolerances
    (autopilot performance)

5
What are your first steps?
  • Evaluate Engineering Solutions, more than one
method of compliance may be available
  • Locate capable and qualified Service Center
  • Obtain data package
  • STC Certificate(s) or SB, Letter of entitlement,
    Flight Manual Revision or Supplements,
    Maintenance Manual Revision, Operational Test
    Procedures, etc.

6
Once you have selected a method of compliance and
a service center, what must you do?
  • Prior to Maintenance
  • Verify AFCS stability performance
  • Confirm required parts and equipment are present

7
What will the service center do?
  • Perform incoming inspections, avionics functional
    checks, pitot static leak checks
  • Service center will apply modification
  • Equipment Changes
  • Skin work
  • Pitot Static System Changes
  • Paintwork
  • Service center will test and inspect, recommend
    aircraft for return to service

8
What is next?
  • At conclusion of service center work you will
    have an, RVSM Compliant Airframe
  • Next after ensuring compliance FAA Aviation
Safety Inspector (ASI) makes PTRS entry
  • ASI will evaluate operator program and
    procedures, maintenance program, MEL
  • Upon issuance of LOA or OpSpec you will have
    airframe and operator authorization

9
What can go wrong?
  • Problems found with in-service aircraft
  • Paint
  • Stripes in the critical area
  • Chips
  • Bubbles
  • Cracks
  • Bumps
  • Fisheyes

10
More that might go wrong
  • Problems found with in-service aircraft
  • Pitot Static
  • Leaky systems
  • Inoperative Pitot Static heat
  • Autopilot
  • Cable Tensions
  • Servo Capstan problems

11
Still more that might go wrong
  • Problems found with in-service aircraft
  • Fuselage
  • Excessive Skin Deviations (waviness)
  • High Spots at Frames
  • Uneven Skin Seams
  • Skin Repair in critical areas
  • Access or Inspection panels out of tolerance
  • Latches or Hinges out of tolerance

12
  • Service centers contacted have facilities
    available
