Title: ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
1ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1st Sunday Exhortation
- Shippensburg
2ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 916
- To morrow about this time I will send thee a
man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel,
that he may save my people out of the hand of the
Philistines for I have looked upon my people,
because their cry is come unto me.
- Samuel had reason to believe that the person to
be identified would save Israel from the
Philistines.
3ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 101
- Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it
upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it
not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be
captain over his inheritance?
- Samuel went right to work to prepare Saul for the
job.
4ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 106-7
- And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee,
and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be
turned into another man. - And let it be, when these signs are come unto
thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee for
God is with thee.
- When the Spirit of God came upon Samson the
Philistines had reason to fear. - Saul could have attacked the Philistines and be
guaranteed that he wouldnt lose.
5ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 109-10
- And it was so, that when he had turned his back
to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart
and all those signs came to pass that day. - And when they came thither to the hill, behold,
a company of prophets met him and the Spirit of
God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
- All the things that Samuel had talked about came
to pass in turn. - The Spirit did come upon Saul because he
prophesied. - But he saw no occasion to do anything else even
though the Philistines were right around him.
6ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1015-16
- And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee,
what Samuel said unto you. - And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly
that the asses were found. But of the matter of
the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him
not.
- The Spirit did come upon Saul because he
prophesied. - But he saw no occasion to do anything else even
though the Philistines were right around him.
7ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 166-7
- And it came to pass, when they were come, that
he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's
anointed is before him. - But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his
countenance, or on the height of his stature
because I have refused him for the Lord seeth
not as man seeth for man looketh on the outward
appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
- There is another way to measure a man that cannot
be so easily observed as to measure his height or
his looks.
8ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1612-13
- And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and
goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise,
anoint him for this is he. - Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed
him in the midst of his brethren and the Spirit
of the Lord came upon David from that day
forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
- So Samuel anointed David.
- The Spirit of YHWH came upon him from that day
forward.
9ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1717-18
- And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for
thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and
these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy
brethren - And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of
their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare,
and take their pledge.
- This chance happening provided the occasion
whereby God could work with David.
10ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1728
- And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he
spake unto the men and Eliab's anger was kindled
against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few
sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and
the naughtiness of thine heart for thou art come
down that thou mightest see the battle.
- Thus David was despised in the eyes of his
brethren.
11ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1736-37
- Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear
and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one
of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the
living God. - David said moreover, YHWH that delivered me out
of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the
bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this
Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and
YHWH be with thee.
- David was stirred by the discrepancy between what
the Philistine was saying and what his brethren
were doing about it. - David knew his God.
12ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- 1 SAMUEL 1752-53
- And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and
shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou
come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron.
And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by
the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto
Ekron. - And the children of Israel returned from chasing
after the Philistines, and they spoiled their
tents.
- Thus a notable victory was won that day.
- This event arose out of an occasion that arose
without David having any idea of what would
transpire.
13ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- JEREMIAH 923-24
- Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory
in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory
in his might, let not the rich man glory in his
riches - But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he
understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord
which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and
righteousness, in the earth for in these things
I delight, saith the Lord.
- The true glory was not in the physical strength
of a man. - The difference was in the fact that one man knew
his God and the other didnt. - This difference between brethren looking at
occasions in their lives is just as true today.
14ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- JOHN 1014-15
- I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and
am known of mine. - As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the
Father and I lay down my life for the sheep.
- Notice the emphasis the Lord places upon knowing.
- We know Him, he knows us.
- He knows the Father and the Father knows him.
- This is the secret of taking advantage of the
occasion.
15ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- JOHN 188-9
- Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he
if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way - That the saying might be fulfilled, which he
spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost
none.
- This is an example of the Lord at work.
- Ceasing the occasion to protect the disciples who
would then flee. - Knowing our Lord becomes a source of
inspiration when we are confronted with occasions.
16ACT WHEN THE OCCASION ARISES
- This Bible School presents a real opportunity for
each of us to get to know our God better. - By giving due diligence to this by prayer,
seeking, learning we will be better prepared to
act when the occasion arises.
