Art Talk Chapter 8
  • Texture

2
  • Study vocabulary!
  • Texture is the element of art that refers to how
things feel, or look as if they might feel if
    touched.
  • We perceive the texture of an object with 2 of
    our senses, touch vision.

3
  • 2-D patterns created by repetition of lines
    shapes are invented textures.
  • Every surface is really an arrangement of light
    dark values.
  • Artists rely on the texture memories of the
viewers who will see their works of art.

4
  • By adding various materials to the surface of
their canvases, artists add real texture to their
    work.
  • By using different fibers in their work, weavers
control the texture of their creations.
  • There are 2 kinds of texture simulated
    invented.

5
  • Simulated texture imitates real texture.
  • Invented textures are 2D patterns created by the
    repetition of line shape.
  • Rough textures reflect light unevenly creating
    irregular patterns of light shadow.

6
  • Smooth textures reflect light evenly.
  • The trompe-loeil painters were called the
masters of visual texture because they depicted
all the objects in sharp focus with great care,
coping every color value pattern of every
    surface exactly.

7
  • Four methods used to add texture are collage
(adding bits pieces of textured paper or
fabric), Frottage (placing freshly painted canvas
over a raised texture scraping across it.),
Grattage (Scratching into wet paint with a tool),
Decalcomania (paint is forced into random
    textured patterns).

8
  • A matte surface reflect soft dull light.
  • A shiny surface reflects light so brightly that
    it seems to glow.
  • Appliqué can enable you to vary texture in an art
work by using an assortment of fabrics with
different textures there by creating contrast
    emphasis in the design.
