2History of Linux
- Linux was invented by Linus Torvalds
- In 1984 Richard Stallman started the GNU project
- This would create a quality, free operating
system - It also had no copying or modifying restrictions

- Stallman created the C Compiler in order to make
the operating system - The operating system was delayed however so Linus
created Linux 0.01 in 1991 - Because it was licensed under GNU commercial
venders soon began releasing their own modified
versions

- Since Linux can be updated and modified easily,
it can take advantage of new hardware easily - Linux is immune to certain viruses such as CIH in
1999 and the love bug in 2000

- 0.02 Basic still needed Minix to work
- 0.11 first stand alone Linux
- 2.2 was used till 2003
- 2.4 was in use until 2006
- 2.6 was the first stable version
- 2004 first version of Ubuntu

- This will be an Ethernet connection
- 1. Click on the NetworkManager Applet (fourth
icon from the left) - 2. Click on new connection then from the submenu
select the type of connection, in this case
Ethernet - 3. Configure the Network Information by selecting
manual setup - 4. Fill out the information and then click next
- 5. Name the connection so it reflects how you
configured the interface.

- If the name reflects the configuration it is
easier to use the same connection for a different
computer. - 6. Click Save or Save and Connect and its
finished.

- First you need an ISP (Internet Service
Provider), a modem, and a Dialup Phone line. - Internet on Linux uses TCP/IP or transmission
control protocol/internet protocol to transmit
information across the internet.

- First you need a crossed cable to physically
connect them. - Then You need NFS installed (Network File
System). It transmits files between computers - Then use command ifconfig. If ETH0 (the Ethernet)
has the IP address your computers are networked.

- Stability-It can run for long periods of time
without rebooting - Performance-Linux can run with a large number of
users at once - Choice-There are many versions to choose from

works(Running Linux, Fourth Edition 44.95 USD) - Plus they sell exclusive versions or updates
