Title: Linux Operating System

1
Linux Operating System
  • Chandler Novak

2
History of Linux
  • Linux was invented by Linus Torvalds
  • In 1984 Richard Stallman started the GNU project
  • This would create a quality, free operating
    system
  • It also had no copying or modifying restrictions

3
History
  • Stallman created the C Compiler in order to make
    the operating system
  • The operating system was delayed however so Linus
    created Linux 0.01 in 1991
  • Because it was licensed under GNU commercial
venders soon began releasing their own modified
    versions

4
History
  • Since Linux can be updated and modified easily,
it can take advantage of new hardware easily
  • Linux is immune to certain viruses such as CIH in
1999 and the love bug in 2000

5
Versions
  • 0.02 Basic still needed Minix to work
  • 0.11 first stand alone Linux
  • 2.2 was used till 2003
  • 2.4 was in use until 2006
  • 2.6 was the first stable version
  • 2004 first version of Ubuntu

6
Top 10 Distributors
  • Ubuntu
  • OpenSUSE
  • fedora
  • debian
  • Mandriva
  • Linux Mint
  • PCLinuxOS
  • Slackware Linux
  • gentoo Linux
  • CentOS
  • FreeBSD

How to Configure Networks with openSUSE Linux
  • This will be an Ethernet connection
  • 1. Click on the NetworkManager Applet (fourth
    icon from the left)
  • 2. Click on new connection then from the submenu
select the type of connection, in this case
    Ethernet
  • 3. Configure the Network Information by selecting
    manual setup
  • 4. Fill out the information and then click next
  • 5. Name the connection so it reflects how you
    configured the interface.

8
How to Configure Networks with openSUSE Linux
  • If the name reflects the configuration it is
easier to use the same connection for a different
    computer.
  • 6. Click Save or Save and Connect and its
    finished.

9
How it Connects to the Internet
  • First you need an ISP (Internet Service
Provider), a modem, and a Dialup Phone line.
  • Internet on Linux uses TCP/IP or transmission
    control protocol/internet protocol to transmit
    information across the internet.

10
How to Connect two Linux Computers
  • First you need a crossed cable to physically
    connect them.
  • Then You need NFS installed (Network File
System). It transmits files between computers
  • Then use command ifconfig. If ETH0 (the Ethernet)
has the IP address your computers are networked.

11
Advantages of Linux
  • Low cost-Linux is a free operating system
  • Stability-It can run for long periods of time
    without rebooting
  • Performance-Linux can run with a large number of
    users at once
  • Choice-There are many versions to choose from

12
Cost
  • Companies make money with Linux mainly from
service and support.(Pantek 150 per hour USD)
  • They also sell books and teach classes on how it
works(Running Linux, Fourth Edition 44.95 USD)
  • Plus they sell exclusive versions or updates
(Vmware Workstation v.6.0 Linux CD 169.99 USD)
