Depression Is
  • as costly overall as coronary heart disease,
    and
  • affects about 1 in ten of us every year, yet
  • only 1 in 3 get assistance

Signs and Symptoms
  • Persistent sad, anxious, or empty feelings
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once
    pleasurable, including sex
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details,
    and making decisions

Signs and Symptoms

  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive
    sleeping
  • Overeating or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • This symptom requires immediate attention. If
    you, or someone you love, is having thoughts of
    suicide or has attempted suicide seek help
    immediately. EAP is available 24 hours a day.
  • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive
    problems that do not ease even with treatment.

  • Psychological, social, and emotional factors

  • Medical illness
  • Sometimes the cause is unknown

  • Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
  • Cognitive
  • Interpersonal
  • Behavioral
  • Psychodynamic
  • Medication (changes brain chemistry)
  • Antidepressants mood stabilizers
  • Combination of psychotherapy medication
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Helping Others
  • Offer emotional support, understanding, patience,
    and encouragement.
  • Listen without judgment.
  • Urge person to get professional help.
  • Encourage them to keep active and busy, socially,
    and at work.
  • Monitor for realistic expectations.
  • Be alert for suicide warning signs.
    Remember, EAP can help

  • Know the signs and symptoms of depression and
    suicide.
  • Manage your stress.
  • Practice healthy living.
  • Give support to coworkers.
  • Seek help and consultation, especially if there
    are thoughts of suicide. (You can call EAP 24
    hours a day.)
