- Proof of Licensure must be provided at NTO
- Massachusetts and federal law mandate all
teachers must be licensed in the subject and
grade level they teach - Teachers of core academic subjects must be
licensed and also demonstrate competency in each
subject they teach (by MTEL or degree) - It is your professional responsibility to know
your personal licensure status and take the
necessary steps to maintain a valid license.
10Salary

11Salary Educational Differentials
Grade (row at the top of the schedule)
Step (column at the left of the schedule)
- Corresponds to your education credits.
- Any credits above 30 on the Masters transcript
can be used for the next grade. - Up to 30 in-service credits can be accumulated
for salary purposes throughout your BPS teaching
career. - For future grade changes, a Personnel Action
Request (PAR) Form (PS-03) is required.
- Corresponds to your years of qualifying service.
- Inside Service (within BPS)
- One year of teaching
- 120 days per school year as a substitute teacher
- Three years as a paraprofessional
- Outside Service
- BPS requires a letter from the previous District,
including the following information - Licensed, full-time teacher
- Taught at least 160 days per school year under
contract - Dates of employment
- Maximum of 3 years of inside service and 3 years
of outside service can be used for credit.

- Third line daily rate (multiplied by 185 equals
your annual salary)
13Payroll
- Enjoy your first paycheck!
- Look for a plain envelope in the mail on that
day. - All documents are required to be added to our
payroll database. - Direct deposit is mandatory.
- First paycheck may not be direct deposit.
- Cash or deposit do not throw it away!
- Check your grade and step.
- Corrections can be applied retroactively.
- Contact your HR Network Liaison if, after you
receive your first paycheck, you have any
questions. - Please do not contact Payroll.

To enroll in health insurance with the City of
Boston, turn in your enrollment forms at NTO !
or submit them to your HR Network Liaison by the
Sept 1 deadline. You may also visit the City of
Boston Health Benefits Office, Room 807, City
Hall. When you visit, take with you a drivers
license or a passport you must be able to prove
who you are. Also, if you would like coverage
for your spouse, you must take your marriage
certificate if you would like coverage for your
children, you must take their birth
certificates. You must enroll within 60 days of
the day you start in your new teaching position
or wait until the annual open enrollment period
each April. Ask the HR Network Liaison who helps
you at the Health Benefits Office to clarify the
effective date of the health insurance. If you
provide a loss of coverage letter within 30 days
from the date your previous insurance ended, you
may receive an earlier effective date. The Health
Benefits Office will be able to provide you with
more information about a loss of coverage
situation. When you visit the Health Benefits
Office, state that you are a new teacher and that
you have completed your employment paperwork with
the Office of Human Resources.
15Time Off
- Sick Days
- 15 days per school year no limit to carry over
- Maximum of 30 days for family illness
- Maximum of 40 days for adoption
- Personal Days
- Four personal days per year
- Thanksgiving recess you cannot take both the
Wednesday before and the Monday after - Unused days carry over into personal sick bank
16Medical Insurance
- City of Boston offers several health plans
- Check the Comparison Sheet or ask for a brochure.
- We have applications.
- Coverage is available for your spouse and
children - Marriage certificate and/or birth certificates
are required to enroll - Enrollment Periods and Effective Dates of
Coverage - Sign up by 29 August coverage effective 1
September. - Sign up 30 August-21 September coverage
effective 1 October. - Sign up 22-28 September coverage will be
effective 1 November. - Sign up 1-25 October coverage effective 1
December. - You must submit completed forms to Health
Benefits Office by 25 October - (60 days from the effective date of your
employment). - Open enrollment period is in April.

20Beginning Teachers
- Meet regularly for 2-2ΒΌ hours/week with a New
Teacher Developer (NTD) - Provide non-evaluative in-classroom mentoring
support for first year teachers to reflect on
practice and developing long-term professional
development goals. - Use the Dimensions of Effective Teaching, the
Districts professional teaching standards (the
poster in your packet), to help with classroom
management, instructional planning, and assessing
student progress. - New Teacher Institute (Mandatory date to be
announced) - Participate in Beginning Teaching Seminars
