Title: Naming Type (III) Compounds

1
Naming Type (III) Compounds
  • Objective To learn how to name molecular
    compounds containing only Nonmetals
  • Go to pg 95
  • Note If youre viewing this online, make sure
    you hit slide show then
  • from beginning

2
Latin Numbers
  • What is the name for ONE?
  • Mono Examples
  • Monopoly The market condition that exists when
    there is only one seller
  • Monologue Any composition, as a poem, in which a
    single person speaks alone.

3
Latin Numbers
  • What is the Latin prefix for eight?
  • Octa
  • What are some examples?
  • Octopus October
  • Origin the eighth month of the early Roman
year, model of September, November, December

4
Which of the examples below are type (III)
compounds?
  • NaCl
  • F2
  • CO2
  • CCl4
  • CuCl
  • CO32-
  • P2O5

5
Disqualifiers
  • If it only has one kind of atom. For example,
Br2 is an element not a compound.
  • If it has a negative or positive charge. For
    example NH4 is an ion.
  • If it doesnt start with a nonmetal like NaCl is
    a ionic compound

6
Rules for Naming Type III Binary Compounds
  • The first element in the formula is named first,
and the full elements name is used.
  • 2. The second element is named as though it were
    an anion.
  • 3. Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of
    atoms present.
  • 4. Do not say mono if the 1st element has only
    one atom CO2

7
Name BF3
  • Rule 1 Name the 1st element,
  • boron.
  • Rule 2 Name the second element ending in -ide
  • fluoride.
  • Rules 3 and 4 Use prefixes to denote numbers of
atoms. 1 boron atom dont use mono! Three
fluorine atoms use the prefix tri-.
  • The name of BF3 is boron trifluoride.

8
Name the Compound NO
  • The name for NO is nitrogen monoxide. Note that
the second o in mono- has been dropped for easier
    pronunciation.
  • The common name for NO, which is often used by
    chemists, is nitric oxide.

9
Name the Compound NaCl
  • Note that this compound starts with a metal. You
follow the old rules of naming the positive ion
    followed by the negative ion.
  • The name is sodium chloride

10
Name the Compound N2O5
  • Dinitrogen pentaoxide

11
Name the Compound Al2O3
  • Aluminum Oxide
  • I hope I didnt fool ya!
  • This is a metal and non-metal. Not a type(III)
    compound.

12
Name the Compound H2O
  • Water
  • I hope I didnt fool ya!

13
Name SO3 and O2-
  • Sulfur trioxide
  • Note that the second one has a negative charge.
  • This is not a molecule. This is an ion. Its
    name is oxide.

14
Name CO CO2 O2
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • This is one of the seven diatomic elements the
    name is Oxygen

15
Name F- F2 AlF3 SF4
  • This is an ion fluoride
  • This is an element fluorine
  • This is type(I) aluminum fluoride
  • This is a type(III) . Sulfur tetra fluoride

16
Name Ca2 Co Co2
  • Calcium
  • Cobalt
  • Cobalt(II)

17
How do I know if they are type (I) , (II) or
(III)?
18
QUIZ 1 5
  • Name the following
  • 1. PO43-
  • 2. P2O5
  • 3. K3P
  • 4. O2
  • 5. SO3

19
Quiz 6
  • 6. Which of the below is/are molecular compounds?
  • (I) PCl3 (II) NO3-
  • a. Both (I) and (II) b. just (I)
  • c. Just (II) d. neither (I) nor (II)

20
Quiz 7
  • Which is not a molecular compound?
  • CO2 CO O2
