WHAT ARE RAINFORESTS?
Tropical rainforests are forests with tall
trees, warm climate, and lots of rain. In some
rainforests it rains more than one inch every
day! Rainforests are found in Africa,Asia,Australi
a and Central and South America. The largest
rainforest in the world is the Amazon rainforest
4
WHY ARE RAINFORESTS IMPORTANT?
  • Rainforests are important to the global
    ecosystem. Rainforests
  • provide a home to many plants and animals
  • help stabilize the world's climate
  • protect against flood, drought, and erosion
  • are a source for medicines and foods
  • support tribal people and
  • are an interesting place to visit

AMAZONTHE WORLDS LARGEST RAINFOREST
The Amazon River Basin is home to the largest
rainforest on Earth. The basin -- roughly the
size of the forty-eight contiguous United States
-- covers some 40 of the South American
continent and includes parts of eight South
American countries Brazil,Bolivia,Peru,Ecuador,Co
lombia,Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname.
6
How large is the Amazon rainforest?
In Brazil, the Amazon covers surface area of
4,005,082 square kilometers. In total, the Amazon
River drains about 6,915,000 square kilometers
(2,722,000 square miles), or roughly 40 percent
of South America.

WILDLIFE IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST
The region is home to about 2.5 million insect
species, tens of thousands of plants, and some
2000 birds and mammals. To date, at least 40,000
plant species, 3,000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427
mammals, 427 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have
been scientifically classified in the region .
Scientists have described between 96,660 and
128,843 invertebrate species in Brazil alone
. The diversity of plant species is the highest
on earth with some experts estimating that one
square kilometre may contain over 75,000 types of
trees and 150,000 species of higher plants. One
square kilometre of Amazon rainforest can contain
about 90,790 tons of living plants. This
constitutes the largest collection of living
plants and animal species in the world. One in
five of all the birds in the world live in the
rainforests of the Amazon. To date, an estimated
438,000 species of plants of economic and social
interest have been registered in the region with
many more remaining to be discovered or
catalogued .

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
Tropical rainforests lie in the tropics",
between the Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of
Cancer. In this region sunlight strikes Earth at
roughly a 90-degree angle resulting in intense
solar energy .This intensity is due to the
consistent day length on the equator 12 hours a
day, 365 days per year (regions away from the
equator have days of varying length). This
consistent sunlight provides the essential energy
necessary to power the forest via photosynthesis.

WHY ARE RAINFORESTS BEING DESTROYED?
  • E Every year an area of rainforest is cut down
and destroyed. The plants and animals that used
to live in these forests either die or must find
a new forest to call their home.
  • Why are rainforests being destroyed? Humans
are the main cause of rainforest destruction or
    deforestation. Humans are cutting down
    rainforests for many reasons, including
  •         Wood for both timber and wood for making
    fires
  •         Agriculture for both small and large
    farms
  •         Land for poor farmers who don't have
    anywhere else to live
  •         Grazing land for cattle and
  •         Road construction

HOW CAN WE SAVE RAINFORESTS?
  • Rainforests are disappearing very quickly. There
are a lot of people who want to save rainforests
but saving rainforests is not going to be easy.
It will take the efforts of many people working
together in order to ensure rainforests and their
wildlife Some steps for saving rainforests and,
on a broader scale, ecosystems around the world
    is to focus on "TREES"
  • Teach others about the importance of the
environment and how they can help save
    rainforests.
  • Restore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on
land where forests have been cut down.
  • Live in a way that doesn't hurt the environment
  • Establish parks to protect rainforests and
    wildlife
  • Support companies that operate in ways that
    minimize damage to the environment
