Who are Young Leaders?
  • They are aged between 14 and 18
  • Work in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop
    (a younger section)
  • Members of the Young Leaders Unit
  • Members of another Explorer Scout Unit
  • YOU are Young Leaders !

The Modules
  • The Young Leaders Scheme is built around 11
    instructional modules
  • Each takes between one and two hours to complete
  • Can be completed as an individual module or as
    part of a course (like this)

Module APrepare for take off!
  • Compulsory for all Young Leaders
  • Covers key areas which every Young Leader will
    need to know
  • The Purpose and Method of the Scout Association
  • Child Protection
  • Policy, Organisation and Rules
  • Activity rules and safety
  • Understanding the role of the Young Leader

Module BTaking the Lead!
  • In Taking the Lead!, you will learn about
    Leadership styles, when to use particular styles
    and the role of the Leader.

Module CThats the way to do it!
  • In Thats the way to do it!, you will explore
    different ways of instructing younger Members.

Module DKids behaving badly
  • In Kids behaving badly, you will learn how to
    deal with difficult situations in your Section
    and the possible causes of bad behaviour.

Module EGame on!
  • Game on! aims to teach you the importance of
    using games as a programme tool in your Section.
    It illustrates different types of games and shows
    how they can be appropriate to different
    circumstances and times.

Module FSpecial people
  • In Special people, you learn to identify the
    Special Needs of Members in your Section. After
    this module, you will understand the importance
    of making adjustments in your programme to take
    these needs in to account.

Module G and HProgramme plans andProgramme
plans plus
  • These modules tackle an important area of Section
    leadership programme planning. The focus of
    these modules is looking at the concept of the
    Balanced Programme. You will initially plan a
    section meeting and then look at more long-term
    programme planning issues.

Module IWhat did they say?
  • In all Sections, input from the Members is
    crucial to success. What did they say? explores
    another important leadership function how to
    communicate effectively with young people and how
    to listen to them.

Module JAwards and badges
  • You will learn how the Awards can complement the
    Balanced Programme and the badges can offer
    challenge and adventure to Beaver Scouts, Cub
    Scouts and Scouts.
  • We will also look at deciding what is good enough
    for a badge.

Module KFirst Response
  • Module K uses a well-tested and established
    training course, the First Response course, to
    teach emergency aid to Young Leaders.
  • We do not have time to include this during the
    weekend.
