The Dual Language Program
  • To provide students the opportunity to learn a
    second language
  • To develop concepts in all areas of instruction
    through hands on activities
  • To promote cross-cultural friendships
  • To enhance the self-esteem of all children
  • To better prepare students for the challenges of
    the 21st century

How will this program benefit your child?
  • Students in the Dual Language program out perform
    their peers academically
  • Commitment to a yearly highly standardized
    program, K-5th grade
  • Becoming bi-lingual and bi-literate
  • Becoming part of a cohort group K-5th grade

Academic Criteria
  • In order to be promoted to 3rd grade your child
    must be able to do the following in Reading
  • The student will be reading on grade level with
    90 accuracy. They will show proficiency in
    phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary,
    comprehension, and fluency.
  • The student will be able to read K-2 sight word
    list.
  • The student will be able to use graphic
    organizers.
  • The student will be able to identify the
    beginning, middle, and end of a story.
  • The student will be able to identify story
    elements.
  • The student will be able to spell frequently used
    words correctly.
  • The student will be able to identify nouns,
    verbs, and adjectives.

  • In order to be promoted to 3rd grade your child
    must be able to do the following in Writing
  • The student will be able to write a paragraph
    with 5 complete sentences.
  • The student will be able to write a paragraph
    centered on one topic with a topic sentence, 3
    supporting sentences and a closing sentence.
  • The student will be able to use proper
    punctuation and capitalization when writing
    sentences.
  • The student will practice DNealian Handwriting
    and begin to write in cursive.
  • The student will use descriptive language and
    varied sentence structure.

  • In order to be promoted to 3rd grade your child
    must be able to do the following in Math
  • The student will be able to add 2 and 3 digit
    numbers with and without regrouping.
  • The student will be able to subtract 2 and 3
    digit numbers with and without regrouping.
  • The student will be able to count a mixed
    collection of coins and bills accurately.
  • The student will be able to tell time in 30
    minute increments.
  • The student will be able to identify place value
    to thousands.
  • The student will be able to count to 1000 by
    twos, threes, fives, tens, twenty-fives, fifties
    and hundreds.
  • The student will be able to identify a pattern.
  • The student will be able to solve number
    sentences where the missing number is represented
    by a geometric shape.

  5. Show respect for school and personal property.
  6. Work and play in a safe manner.

Reward/Consequence
  • Must always have SIGNED agenda reinforce any
    positive or negative behavior at home.
  • 4 or more ? a week Fun Friday time.
  • Good Behavior Students will receive special
    events, treats, stickers, praise.
  • Bad Behavior One Verbal Warning, Change their
    color, time out, parent letter or phone call,
    visit to an administrator.
  • Receive all smiles for the whole month special
    event!

Testing Policy
  • The second grade testing policy states 
  • If a student talks during any classroom test, he
    or she will receive an automatic F and cannot be
    retested.
  • Tests cannot be corrected at home and returned
    for a higher grade. 
  • Any unanswered questions will be counted wrong.
  • Points will be deducted for not writing a name on
    the test.

  • Grades will be posted on e-Sembler.

  • You must register to use this site.
  • Math grades will consist of chapter tests from
    the Harcourt Series and Unit Tests created by the
    countys math department.

  • Reading grades will be given weekly as one grade
    that is an average of the Storytown Test and a
    Vocabulary Test. (There will be no grades on
    weeks we do not have a story.)
  • Language Arts grades will also be given weekly as
    one grade that is an average of the spelling test
    and a grammar test.

  • Weekly Homework sheet and packet

  • Make sure to check your childs work!!!!
  • READ, READ, READ for 20 minutes!
  • 3 missing assignments in one week could result in
    Tuesday School or making the work up during Fun
    Friday.

Spelling Tic Tac Toe
Make a set of flashcards on index cards to study your words. Write each word once. Divide the word into syllables using slashes. Write all your words once using something other than a pencil.
Find synonyms (words that mean the same thing) for your words. Write each word. Cross out all the silent letters. Find and cut letters from magazines or newspapers to spell 10 spelling words. Glue on paper.
Put all 15 words in reverse (backward) alphabetical order. Have an adult give you a practice test at home. Be sure the test is checked and signed by an adult. Write each word using rainbow colors.

Accelerated Reader (AR)
  • Your child will be taking computer-based
    comprehension tests on books he or she has read.
  • The score on the test and difficulty of the book
    determine the amount of points given.
  • Points Prizes!
  • We are encouraging 3 AR tests a week, as a goal.

  • Shirt colors are white, red, blue, and pink.
    Striped shirts are not approved.

Dual Language Parent Contract
  • 1. In the 50-50 Dual Language model, my child
    will receive instruction in Spanish

    and English for equal amounts of time.
  • 2. My child will continue to develop
    academically, socially, and culturally in his/her
    second language through the duration of the
    program.
  • 3. My child will develop bilingual (understanding
    and speaking) and bi-literate (reading and
    writing) competencies in the two languages.
  • 4. My child will receive homework in both
    languages and will be responsible for it. This
    will help in the development of both languages.
  • 5. My childs academic performance will be on
    grade level in both languages in accordance
    with each grade level curriculum. If his/her
    performance is below grade level he/she may be
    placed in a regular education classroom according
    to his/her academic needs.

  • 6. My child will maintain positive behavior and
    follow the Lake County Schools Code of Conduct.
  • 7. My child will maintain a consistent attendance
    record. I will inform the school of his/her
    absences due to illness or family emergencies.
  • 8. My child will be reassigned to a regular
    education classroom if participation in the Dual
    Language Program in no longer an option.
  • 9. I will commit to attend Dual Language
    Enrichment Program parent meetings,
    participate in Dual Language programs, and
    support the teachers of the program.
