Essential Question
  • Why are 1.1 Billion people undernourished when
there is currently enough food grown to feed
    everyone?

3
Population Calculations
  • Use the data to calculate the percent of the
worlds population in the following regions
Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America,
    Oceania and Asia
  • Percent of the population population of the
    region x 100
  • world population

4
Percent of the World Population per Region
5
GNI Calculations
  • Use the GNI per capita and the population of each
    region to calculate
  • the GNI per region
  • the percent of the worlds GNI per region.
  • GNI per region Population x GNI per capita
  • Percent GNI per region x 100
  • World GNI

6
Divide the Cake!
  1. Using the percent of the worlds population per
region, calculate the number of students per
region if the class was the world.
  2. Put colored paper in a hat to represent the
number of students per region in our little
world within the classroom and randomly draw
    your region.
  3. Using the data from the percent of the Worlds
GNI per region, and divide the cake per region.

7
Percent of Worlds GNI per region
8
World Population Increase
  • Use the data to calculate the percent increase in
    the world population by 2050.
  • Percent increase (new value original value) x
    100
  • original value

9
32 increase in the world population by 2050
  • Under current production and consumption trends,
global food production must increase 60 by 2050
in order to meet the demands of the growing world
    population.
  • Food and Agriculture Organization, UN

10
Food Distribution and GNI
  • One possible cause of the inequitable food
    distribution is money.
  • Graph by hand or using excel
  • Percent of Undernourished Population versus per
    capita GNI

11
World Food Production produces enough to feed us
all
  • Outline the reasons why so many people are
    currently undernourished.
  • Read the pages in the course companion first.
You may also use any reliable online resource.
